Chevelle – Wonder What’s Next
Right off the bat I was impressed with Chevelle, right with the first beat of hearing The Red I knew Chevelle was the real thing. They were a hard rock band in a world that had gone pop-punk, and even better they were a good rock band. They had issues they wanted to sing about, they had feelings they wanted to express in their music. They had art they wanted to create.
Wonder What’s Next was Chevelles first major label release, they released an album (Point #1) back in 1999 on an independent label called Squint Entertainment, and probably one of the best albums of the decade, not many main stream bands have been able to impress me as much as Chevelle did with their debut album.
The Red was the first single from the album, it’s an anthem for those who have anger issues, it gives you an idea about how the album flows, it’s angry and painful. It’s very reminiscent of the bands from the early 90’s (grunge) but where those bands concentrated on the melancholy of what they were playing, Chevelle’s music is more intense and hard, if Wonder What’s Next was a person it would punch you in the face for looking at it the wrong way.
I’ve probably listened to this album 100 times since 2002 and I never get tired of listening to it. It’s a powerful record that deserves to recognize as a future classic.
