2) SUGARBEAT IN L.A. FOR TWO SHOWS
+
SUGARBEAT, the new trio of REBECCA SAYRE, RACHEL PEARL, KRISTIN PORTER, is mid-way along their June 11-22 California tour, and playing two Southern Cal dates, Friday & Saturday, June 18 & 19 at different venues. Singer-songwriter and band member REBECCA SAYRE tells us, “Something really cool happened last Christmas. I met these two jazzy, guitar-playing, beautiful, songwriting divas! Only, they don’t act like divas at all, and after one gig together back in January, at the Bluebird Café [in Nashville], we decided to form a trio.”
+
Immediately, they began to attract attention: “SUGARBEAT is just plain fun, sweet, and groovy – not to mention totally infectious. Nice blends of jazz, blues, pop, and swing. Inventive backup vocals with sophisticated harmonies, framed by crisp, hooky rhythms and tasteful riffs on their electric guitars.” – Ron Browning, Nashville Performance Coach.
+
Take a listen and catch a video at www.reverbnation.com/thesugarbeat.
+
Friday, June 18, 8-10 pm SUGARBEAT is part of the night’s lineup of “LISA TURNER AND FRIENDS” at Kulak’s Woodshed in North Hollywood; no cover, artists contribute performances to the venue, and a minimum $10 donation is (more or less) expected.
+
Saturday, June 19, SUGARBEAT headlines their own evening and is one of our “Show-of-The-Week” picks, with their musical guests LARRY & RHONDA JACKSON, at 7 pm at the Claremont Center for Spiritual Living in Claremont (N of Pomona); tix, $15; info and directions, www.claremontcsl.org/calendar/event.html.

3) JOE CRAVEN, WITH HIS “JAWBONES, CANJOES, & CAKEPANS,” HITS L.A.
+
We really, really, recommend these two shows, and both earn our “Show-of-the-Week” picks. Moreover, we recommend you take any chance you ever get to be in the company of JOE CRAVEN. It isn’t simply that he is the Folk Alliance FAR-West “Best of the West” 2009 winner and renowned DAVID GRISMAN QUINTET alum, or even that he is a very big deal act. Or even, on stage, that he is a perpetual motion machine. The man is a genius. Go. Listen to his music from a vast array of improvised and traditional instruments. Listen to his words, and hope you catch him in a mood to expound and pontificate. If you’ve attended the Live Oak Music Festival or the Millpond Music Festival, you may think you know him. He is a performing emcee every year at both.
+
JOE CRAVEN was the recipient of the 2009 Folk Alliance FAR-West “Best of the West” award, and for good reason. He is an inspired musical madman, coaxing melodies and rhythms from anything that has strings attached – or not – including violins, mandolins, tin cans, bedpans, gas cans, cookie tins, chamberlins, tenor guitars, panitars, mouthbows, charangos, banjos, canjoes, cuatros, bongos, buckets, berimbau, bundt pans, balalaikas, brake drums, bells, bottles, brush ‘n box, oud, hambone, jawbone, water jugs, triangles, cajons, cymbals, spoons, ukuleles, and anything else near to hand.
+
“A multi-virtuoso, Joe Craven displays a dazzling set of fiery chops on a literal cornucopia of instruments” – AcousticMusic.com
+
Picture a stage that looks more like a yard sale; found objects from the natural environment as well as dumpsters, yard sales and thrift stores. Throw-in string and percussion instruments from around the world – and around the house. Connect this with a dash of technology involving plugging in electric bedpans and balalaikas and looping landscapes of sound – all created in the moment by Joe. Then toss rhythmically with some corny jokes, storytelling, a little theater thickener, a pinch of audience participation and – voila! Welcome to “The Joe Show”…Joe is a musical madman with anything that has strings attached; violin, mandolin, tin can, bedpan, cookie tin, tenor guitar, mouth bow, banjo, berimbau, balalaika, boot ‘n lace, animal bones, squeeze toys, cake pans, waste cans, umbrella stands, martini shakers and himself. Joe has made music with folks from jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli to Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia to The Persuasions.
+
For almost 17 years, Joe was the highly respected multi-instrumentalist with the DAVID GRISMAN QUINTET. Joe held a challenging post as Grisman’s percussionist and fiddler, sometimes swatting backbeats and trading licks on mandolin next to Grisman – at times all within one tune. And Joe is equally famous for displaying his joy through any musical workout. He’s made a wide range of music with a wide range of artists including Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia, jazz violinist Stéphane Grappelli, The Alison Brown Quartet, Maria Muldaur, Vassar Clements, Psychograss, Rob Ickes, The Persuasions, and many, many others.
+
“It is rare to find a musician with such talent…” – All Music Guide.
+
Joe has made contributions to several Grammy nominated projects and performed music and sound effects on a wide variety of recordings, commercials, soundtracks, and computer games. As an educator, Joe’s clinics, “Playshops,” camp and school presentations on music participation have captivated audiences around the country. He’s worked with students from preschool to adult in a variety of settings – and even taught Coffee Gallery Backstage impresario Bob Stane to play the fiddle, on the spot. Bob says he had never even touched a fiddle, nor ever played any instrument, before that.
+
“One of the most daringly inventive musicians working today.” – Mandolin Magazine.
+
Joe Craven is not just an entertaining musician with a penchant for the mischievous, he is a teacher and student all at once and he will draw you into his performance by including you as though you’re part of the show itself. Joe is always looking for the next expression or breath or object to make music with. His gift of gab is unprecedented and his musical knowledge impressive. And Joe’s openness and expression of gratitude for the gifts he’s been given make it all the more fun for him to share with his audience.
+
“Joe Craven’s fiddle and mandolin playing are outstanding.” – Fiddler Magazine.
+
“Joe Craven’s playing will make your jaw drop in wonder and amazement. He’ a dazzling soloist, his virtuosity matched by his ability to swing.” – Paste Magazine.
+
When the western regional arm (FAR West) of Folk Alliance International (formerly known as the North American Folk Music & Dance Alliance) awarded Joe its highest honor, “Best of The West,” for 2009, he was in esteemed company. Previous recipients have included The Kingston Trio, Rosalie Sorrels, Utah Phillips, and Lowen & Navarro. The award was presented November 7, 2009, during the FAR West annual conference at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Irvine, California – the same time and place where Coffee Gallery Backstage impresario Bob Stane received the FAR West Ambassador Award, the organization’s highest honor for non-musicians. Wow. Catch Joe at the CGB, and it’s both of ‘em, together again, in the same room… last time that happened, Joe taught Bob to play the fiddle. No telling what Bob will learn from Joe this time.
+
Friday, June 25, at 8 pm JOE CRAVEN performs at the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena (“the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”); reservations 626-794-2424; info www.coffeegallery.com. Tix, $20.
+
Saturday, June 26, at 8 pm, JOE CRAVEN performs at “Russ & Julie’s House Concert” series in Oak Park (Thousand Oaks / Agoura Hills area); reservations get directions at 818-707-2179 or houseconcerts@jrp-graphics.com. Series and show info, www.houseconcerts.us. Russ & Julie add, “We will have our usual ‘potluck’ style coffee and dessert buffet.” Doors open for the best seats at 7:30 pm. Donation is $15 per person, payable in cash at the door. All the money goes to the performer.

4) BLUE COLLAR COMBO WINS “ROCKABILLY SHOWDOWN” & JUNE 20 CONCERT WITH JAMES INTVELD
+ BLUE COLLAR COMBO, who bills themselves as “A Working Band for the Working Man,” will open for rockabilly headliner JAMES INTVELD on Sunday, June 20, as a result of winning this spring’s “West Coast Rockabilly Showdown” at the Orange County Market Place, the big weekend swap meet at the O.C. Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa. The win comes with a $1,000 prize for first place. +
Four guys who perform mostly at car shows and “Rockabilly Fridays” at a local bar and grill in Reseda moved things up a few notches when their band BLUE COLLAR COMBO was named the winner of the Rockabilly Showdown. Together five years, the band includes ZACHARY SIMPSON, 26, of Saugus, on rhythm guitar and back up vocals; BRANDON DIXON, 25, of Santa Clarita, on bass and back up vocals; TRAVIS CLAYTON, 27, of Quartz Hill, on lead vocals and guitar; and RONNIE BARTOLI, 40, of Lancaster, on drums.
+
The event pitted unsigned bands in a competition spanning four weekends. The top four bands from the Showdown performed in a final competition on Saturday, June 5, vying for $2,500 in cash awards and the opportunity to open a show on June 20 for JAMES INTVELD. + A total of 12 bands were chosen initially, via electronic audition submittals, to compete. These included musicians primarily from Southern California, though the lead vocalist in one of the groups flew in from Nashville, Tennessee. + Second place winner was KARLING ABBEYGATE of Los Angeles, who won $750. Third place of $500 was won by AMBER FOXX of Anaheim. Fourth place went to The PALOMINOS from San Diego, who won $250. + BLUE COLLAR COMBO will be back on stage at noon, June 20, opening for headliner JAMES INTVELD,who performs from 1:30-3 pm. +
Intveld appreciates the competition winners’ slogan, “A Working Band for the Working Man,” because he, too, is a working man.
+
JAMES INTVELD (http://us.mc819.mail.yahoo.com/wiki/Rockabilly) is a Los Angeles-based rockabilly pioneer, and an actor, composer, and director, who started his music career by forming a rockabilly band with his brother RICKY INTVELD and PAT WOODWARD called THE ROCKIN’ SHADOWS. They played all over Southern California, and Ricky and Pat were asked by the late RICKY NELSON to join his band. Ricky and Pat were killed in the plane crash along with Nelson. James went on playing as a solo act, touring throughout the world, playing venues like the legendary Palomino (http://us.mc819.mail.yahoo.com/w/index.php?title=The_Palomino&action=edit&redlink=1).
+
Intveld was a member of THE BLASTERS (http://us.mc819.mail.yahoo.com/wiki/The_Blasters) for a while, and has been in many movies and music videos with other artists including KATHY MATTEA (http://us.mc819.mail.yahoo.com/wiki/Kathy_Mattea) and GEORGE STRAIT.
+
Intveld directed the movie “Miracle at Sage Creek,” starring the late DAVID CARRADINE (http://us.mc819.mail.yahoo.com/wiki/David_Carradine).
+
Intveld co-starred with BILLY BOB THORNTON (http://us.mc819.mail.yahoo.com/wiki/Billy_Bob_Thornton) in “Chrystal.” James Intveld’s latest CD is “Have Faith,” his third studio recording. He divides his time between homes in Nashville and L.A. + Today’s concert is part of the Spring / Summer Concert Series at the Orange County Market Place. (That series includes a Woodstock Music tribute on July 10 & 11 with THE SUMMER OF LOVE on July 10 and WOODSTOCK MUD on July 11; that’s the weekend before the Market Place closes for the annual Orange County Fair. Concerts both days are at noon and 2 pm, and will feature tie dye vendors and other artisans, with hippie stilt walkers and free face painting.) + In its 41st year, the swap meet operates the concert series, and has over 1000 vendors, food concessions, fresh produce, artisans and crafters, manufactured homes, kid’s playground and more, every Saturday and Sunday, 7 am-4 pm, except during the annual Orange County Fair. More on concerts and all their other events at www.ocmarketplace.com or at 949-723-6616.
+ Concert and swap meet admission is FREE with the donation of a canned food item for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County. Otherwise, general admission is $2; children age 12 and under are always free. .

5) THE FAREWELL DRIFTERS HARMONIZE ON DEBUT CD
+
Since their formation a few years ago, THE FAREWELL DRIFTERS, a Nashville-based band, has burst on to the acoustic scene at high-profile festivals like “GREY FOX” and “MERLEFEST.” Their debut album, “Yellow Tag Mondays”, was just released June 8 on Heart Squeeze Records / Thirty Tigers, and its quickly collecting comments. Their own promo cites their display of “rich harmonies, sophisticated playing and disarmingly honest songwriting… the national debut from this versatile quintet is a complex combination of smart, modern songs and acoustic warmth and purity that will undoubtedly captivate fans of nearly every musical genre.”
+
We see them as smackdab in the mainstream of the acoustic renaissance.
+
THE FAREWELL DRIFTERS feature an acoustic lineup (two acoustic guitars, mandolin, fiddle, upright bass) that serves as the perfect setting for their folk and pop sensibility and allows them to explore a multitude of genres, creating a sonic landscape that is strikingly different and new.
+
Co-founders ZACH BEVILL (guitar, lead vocals) and JOSH BRITT (mandolin) have pulled together their diverse musical backgrounds to build songs that embrace their tastes and talents, supported by Josh’s brother CLAYTON BRITT (lead guitar), and DEAN MAROLD (bass) and CHRISTIAN SEDELMYER (fiddle). Upon meeting, Bevill and Josh Britt (they call him Britt) immediately bonded over a love of both the revolutionary pop music of the ‘60s and progressive acoustic music, and found a musical hybrid they call “a melodic concoction of soaring vocal harmonies, stringed instruments and catchy hooks.”
+
They’re collecting approval and acclaim. Peter Rowan says they have “Creative flow and joyful harmonies.” Mark Tucker, writing for the Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange, says “This young quintet is blending folk, bluegrass, newgrass, mild country, and various other roots styles into a predominantly mellow-rock format that goes down easy.” Zachary Greenberg, writing in their hometown paper, The Nashville Review, says “If a young Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel had ever gathered with Brian Wilson and the young Beach Boys and formed a Nashville string band, it might just have sounded like The Farewell Drifters.” While OnTap Magazine sees something altogether different but still good, writing, “No acoustic string band, this quintet pushes the envelope with graceful harmonies, soothing lyrics and major string skills.” Chris Spector, writes in the Midwest Record, “Pull up a chair, tip it back on two legs and enjoy a warm afternoon with this bunch in the background. Not exactly country, bluegrass or folk, they are the new wave and this is one cool wave to ride. A great contemporary roots set that roots fans will love.” Finally, Franne Jennings, in The Amplifier, says, “The Farewell Drifters are among the leaders for the next generation in this unfolding epic we call American Music.” +
THE FAREWELL DRIFTERS newest track-by-track video is available at http://app.streamsend.com/c/11421151/1355/mRfCo49/KCRD?redirect_to=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMYtUmJKWss&feature=player_embedded
+
Alas, their current tour won’t get ‘em closer than Colorado (July 22 in Boulder, playing Whistle Stop Park, and July 24, playing the “ROCKYGRASS” Festival in Lyons) so if you’re in Southern Cal, you’ll need to content yourself with the new CD and the video link.

6) RED HOUSE HAS EXCELLENT NEW CDs FOR SUMMER
+
The label, located between downtown St. Paul and Minneapolis’ West Bank, continues to shine atop the list of those releasing folk-Americana music. There’s an exciting project due for release on July 13. It’s “RED HORSE,” an album featuring an all-star folk trio of heretofore solo artists ELIZA GILKYSON, JOHN GORKA, & LUCY KAPLANSKY. It features the three covering each other’s songs, along with “a few fun covers” and some new originals. Following the album’s release, the three will tour together, playing festivals and key venues throughout 2010 and 2011. We’ll look forward to THAT, for sure. +
Meanwhile, PETER OSTROUSHKO, a music-making cast member of radio’s “A Prairie Home Companion,” has a new Red House CD, released this spring. It’s titled, “When the Last Morning Glory Blooms.” On it, the Emmy Award-winning composer, fiddler and mandolinist goes back to his heartland roots, featuring master bluegrass musicians NORMAN & NANCY BLAKE and country fiddler JOHNNY GIMBLE (of Bob Wills’ legendary Texas Playboys), bringing to life some moving instrumentals that Peter thinks are the best of his career. All Music Guide says, “There’s a quiet elegance and an undeniable timelessness embedded in the ten songs that comprise ‘When the Last Morning Glory Blooms.’” +
That’s in addition to individual new CDs from Red House label mates RUTH MOODY (THE MAMMALS), PIETA BROWN, STORYHILL, and MEG HUTCHINSON. Here in L.A., it’s tough to know that these new CDs have already hit the charts on folk and Americana radio, and that’s propelled several of their tracks to chart on Billboard. Check ‘em out at www.redhouserecords.com.

7) MICHELLE WRIGHT TO LAUNCH CROSS-CANADA ACOUSTIC TOUR +
[Editor’s note: Regular readers know we often rail against the soundalike sameness and enforced conventions of Nashville’s clichéd songs about dysfunctional relationships with losers – in short, everything that emerges from the extrusion die that is the Nashville music machine. (We still enjoy cowboy musician Don Edwards’ observations from his live performance-interview on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” He said, “They may call it country, but I don’t know what country it’s from,” and, “It used to be country and western, but now it’s neither of either.”) So, when an artist with something different emerges, especially from Nashville, we enjoy sharing it.]
+
MICHELLE WRIGHT is one of Canada’s most widely recognized and awarded country singers with over 30 major music industry awards to her credit, a string of 25 Top Ten hits on radio, including seven Number One singles, and nearly 2 million albums sold in North America. The first Canadian-born artist in the modern era of country music to have a Top Ten hit in the U.S., to have a Number One video on CMT-USA, and to win an Academy of Country Music Award, Michelle has been recognized from the outset for her expressive voice and distinctive style. She is a genuine Canadian country music star. +
BRIAN FERRIMAN, president of Savannah Music and Wright’s personal manager announced in early June that the Savannah Recording artist will return home shortly after Canadian Thanksgiving for an extensive 24-city, cross-Canada “acoustic concert tour.”
+ The upcoming tour is called “WRIGHTSONGS 2010 – AN ACOUSTIC EVENING WITH MICHELLE WRIGHT.” It begins in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, on Thursday, October 14, and finishes in Maple Ridge, British Columbia, on Friday, November 12. It will feature Michelle in “a comfortably intimate setting along with her lead guitarist and her keyboard player.” The trio will present a selection of material from her eight-album catalogue, “plus,” Ferriman promises, “some brand new songs and a few surprises and stories, too – all punctuated by the powerful hits that have earned Michelle recognition as one of Canada’s greatest vocal talents.”
+
A few songwriter-musicians, most notably RICKY SCAGGS, have done it: gained Nashville success and its material rewards, and then taken their music in the direction they want to go, and find artistically satisfying. Let’s hope the same can be true for Michelle Wright. More on the artist, her summer dates, and her career, at www.michelle-wright.com.

8) GET TIX NOW FOR JULY 31
+
Yikes! Both of these are the same night, Saturday, July 31. Though, if you do it right, you can get to both of them. Both are “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” picks in the Guide. Both will sell-out. So get your tickets while you can.
+
At 4 pm is the “ROOTS ROADHOUSE” with DAVE ALVIN, MODEL-T FORD, PETE ANDERSON, CHATHAM COUNTY LINE, THE CHAPIN SISTERS, I SEE HAWKS IN LA, OLD CALIFORNIO, LESLIE & THE BADGERS, OLIN & THE MOON, THE WHISPERING PINES, AND TRIPLE CHICKEN FOOT, at The Echo and Echoplex in Echo Park; 213 413-8200; www.attheecho.com. Presented by The Echo and Grand Ole Echo series. This will be a top show of the summer. Show is 18+. Tix, $10 advance, $12 day of show.
+
At 8 & 10 pm (two shows) KINKY FRIEDMAN plays McCabe’s in Santa Monica; www.mccabes.com; tix, 310-828-4497. The Kinkster is pundit, novelist, singer-songwriter, and pontificating cigar-chomping reprobate who scared the hell out of the Texas political establishment when he ran for governor with the slogan, “Why the hell not?” One of his novels, “The Mile High Club,” published pre-9/11, predicted that terrorists would hijack an airliner and fly it into the World Trade Center. His songs were covered by a who’s-who of the music world in a tribute album that won a Grammy. His hourlong performance-interview on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks” was a huge favorite with the show’s listeners. No word whether his sideman, LITTLE JEWFORD, will join him tonight. (That, if you’re wondering, derives from the name of his band, KINKY FRIEDMAN & THE TEXAS JEW BOYS.) Yep, he’s eccentric, and a whole lot of thought-provoking fun. Tix $30.

9) THIS WEEK’S HISTORY PRESENTATION
+
Yes, we do enjoy pointing-out the significance of anniversaries, especially those you’d likely miss, otherwise. Last week, we brought you the significance of June 17. Earlier this month, we related multiple events that make June 6 one of the most significant dates in history. And just a few days ago, we heard from someone who remembered our feature on April 14, and they said they were still amazed that so much had happened that day.
+
This week, we have a special feature on the significance of June 25. It’s the first thing you’ll find under the banner for that date in the Guide. We won’t spoil it for you here, by revealing what it’s about. That would be telling. We hope you enjoy it.

10) “GIRLS OF THE NORTH COUNTRY” ON PBS
+
You always know it’s pledge drive time on PBS, because you found a music performance, and you know that’s the only time they air those. This time around, we stumbled across a concert by three all-girl groups in Canada. The show, “Girls of the North Country,” features the DALA duo, and THE GOOD LOVELIES, and OH SUSANNAH. We hadn’t yet heard any of them, but we’re glad we did.
+
One tidbit we caught, during those wall-to-wall begging sessions, was the American narrator / chief fund drive beggar chatting with DALA, and observing, “There really is a folk resurgence today, isn’t there? People want to hear this music.” DALA’s Amanda (the “Da” in the group’s name) and Sheila, (the “La”), readily agreed, of course. Their music is luscious vocal harmonies with piano (some of it four-hand), guitar, or ukulele accompaniment.
+
Collectively the music – all-acoustic – ranged from originals to creatively original covers of Judy Collins’ “Both Sides Now,” Gordon Lightfoot’s “Alberta Bound,” The Band’s “The Weight,” and old standards made new, including “Good Night, My Love.”
+
It’s a 2010 show, recorded at the Diamond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts in Ontario, Canada, produced by Lenz Entertainment and distributed by International Media.
+
Since PBS is always doing pledge drives these days, and the L.A.-area has more than one PBS station, we recommend you look for the show. We caught it on KCET. Of course, KOCE only runs music during pledge drives, but they beg just as much, so you may catch the show there. Or maybe you’ll get lucky and it’ll be on KLCS, the only one that carries “Austin City Limits” and any other PBS music shows with no annoying interruptions.
