Dex Romweber Duo: Is That You In The Blue?
Cult favorite Dexter Romweber’s Flat Duo Jets were unabashed devotees of early basic rock and roll. Bashing out standards (Buddy Holly’s “Think It Over)”, obscure covers (Benny Joy’s “Wild Wild Lover”) and originals that could have been covers they flirted with fame: an appearance on Letterman, MTV and they were featured in the film Athens, Georgia: Inside Out.
After a post Flat Duo Jets solo career Dex recruited sister and drummer Sara Romweber and formed another two piece band, the Dex Romweber Duo. On Is That You In The Blue? (Bloodshot Records) Dex expands his scope to include different styles (surf and samba) and the sixties (covering the Yardbirds’ cover of “I Wish You Would” ).
Dexter Romweber is an underappreciated treasure trove of early rock (think Doc Watson and traditional American music) and if you haven’t seen it yet check out It Might Get Loud if only for the scene where Jack White, Jimmy Page and the Edge sit around a turntable listening to Dexter’s version of Frog Went A Courtin’ .
The folks at Paste are currently offering a stream of Is That You In The Blue? for your listening pleasure. Dexter has only slightly updated his sound, his growl has matured into a baritone croon and with his trusty Silvertone the Dex Romweber Duo has recorded the perfect soundtrack for the next David Lynch film.
