Cheek Sparger, A Funny Little Road
Between Dallas and Fort Worth, in the mid-cities area, is a road named Cheek Sparger. Twenty five years ago it was a country lane bordered by trees and fields and a few farms.
Now there is a shopping center at one end, million dollar homes at the other, and traffic, lots of traffic. Newcomers to the area call the road Cheeseburger.
“Why would anyone choose such a weird name as Cheek Sparger for a road?” a newcomer asked in a tone suggesting the people in this new place she had moved to might be a bit weird.
“The Cheek family and the Sparger family had farms there,” I told her in what I hoped was a “well duh” tone.
“Oh,” she said with surprise in her voice. “I didn’t realize there were real people there once.”
“Yeah, we used to have a lot of real people around here.”

When I blogged the exchange above, Mike Brown of Euless, who is familiar with the road and also with the changes that have taken place during the past few decades, was inspired to write the song, Funny Little Road. I was surprised and delighted when he brought a copy by my house one night. I loved the song at first listen. When he mentioned that he listed as co-writer , well, I loved it even more. :o)
