Alejandro Escovedo at the Middle East Cambridge,MA 7/19
The Middle East is a hotspot in the Boston-Cambridge music scene, but it is a small club played mostly by bands who haven’t made it big yet. I was surprised to see Alejandro playing here, and to only a couple hundred people. It was great for a fan like me to see him in such an intimate setting, but, at this point in his career, he deserves to be headlining a much bigger venue. Don’t understand why he doesn’t have a larger following around here, especially after his last two albums got a fair amount of publicity.
However, his show was great! His voice was great! It didn’t seem to matter to him that there was only a small crowd. He was warm and personable, and gave it hell, like he always does. He had a stripped down band: two guitars, base and drums, and played mostly straight ahead rock & roll with a lot of songs from Real Animal and Streetsongs.
Encored, of course, with All the Young Dudes.
(I did miss the violin and cello, though.)
(I’m not really a reviewer, by the way, just a fan.)
