THROUGH THE LENS: Our Favorite Roots Music Photos of 2023

This week’s column features just a few of the many outstanding photos taken this year by 36 ND photographers. From New York to Australia, the 66 photos in the gallery below are representative of each photographer’s work as well as the many branches of roots music. You will not find a more encompassing group of photos of musicians anywhere, regardless of genre. From legends such as Willie Nelson, Joni Mitchell, and Bruce Springsteen to legends in the making like Brandi Carlile, Tyler Childers, and Valerie June, this week’s column has something for everyone.
In reviewing several thousand photos for this week’s column, I quickly noticed that the most photographed roots artists this year were Allison Russell, Margo Price, Sierra Ferrell, and Molly Tuttle. This should not be all that surprising as all are vibrant, captivating performers who toured extensively during 2023.
The other thing I noticed was the increase of black-and-white photos. I cannot surmise why that was, but I do know that virtually every photographer who began with film in the camera instead of a sensor and a digital memory card began in black and white. There were so many that it seems fitting that should be a theme for one of next year’s columns.
Quite a few of the photos below have been featured in this column throughout the year, but as many have not. I urge to take your time when viewing them, ideally via the slideshow option.
