The Davide Recchia Trio – “Perfect Equipose”
The Davide Recchia Trio never plays it safe. If the creative success of their latest album Perfect Equipose is to be summarized, that is largely the reason. Guitarist/composer Recchia, bassist Yuri Goloubev, and drummer Alberto Girardi walk unafraid, exploring the fringes of jazz yet remaining accessible to listeners not open to too much sonic adventurousness. The musicianship throughout is tightly knitted, brave, and trembling with barely contained energy.
Recchia’s jagged guitars on “110 Feet from the Ground” echo the transcendence of the title. Recchia is plugged into another plane of existence here as Goloubev’s pummeling bass lines and Girardi’s hyperkinetic drumming increase the feelings of tension and release. The chemistry between the band members is explosive; they must rip it up in live performance. Girardi further shines on “Scratch Line,” which he wrote himself. His slamming drums rattle the senses and fuel the imagination on “Scratch Line.”
Versatility is key to Recchia and his fellow musicians. None of the tracks resemble one another so the whole album feels fresh. From the tranquil beauty of “The Daring Dreamer” to the film-noir darkness of “Blues for Petit Philippe,” the trio operates from a wide open canvas, unreeling one potent image after another. Fabulous.
