Sheesham Lotus & Son on tour in Scotland and in Conversation with Rob Ellen
I had the great good fortune to spend three days on the road across Scotland with the three musical wizards that are Sheesham Lotus and Son, on the weekend following The Scottish Independence Referendum, my wee country had been through the mill. No voters and yes voters alike paid witness to the power of music to uplift the human spirit and I paid witness to the healing effect and medicine of music at its best and at its most import. A real privilege and a weekend I will never ever forget.
Sheesham, Lotus and Son’ commitment to the preservation of music and tradition of the past is indelible.
At the core of the show is a repertoire based on their love of the American fiddle tune, joyously played with banjo and before long, a startling array of traditional and non-trad instruments make appearances. Tunes played on jaw-harps, gourd banjos and homemade instruments like the contra-bass harmoni-phoneum add depth and absurdity to their amazing sound, as they sing into their patented sepia-phonic Monophone, an acoustical filter into which they project their voices in stupefying harmonies, while playing ragtime and blues in pleasing mono-phonic delivery.
As a banjo and fiddle duet, and with their critically acclaimed trio, (Sheesham and Lotus & ‘Son) Sheesham and Lotus bring it all to Europe for the very first time, I got to do the last 3 shows of a highly successful, first visit. Here is my travel Video Log, Interview and a couple of live tunes.
Haste Ye Back boys.
