Get to Know PALEFACE
Schooled personally by friend Daniel Johnston, Paleface was discovered at an NYC open mic by the legendary Danny Fields (The Stooges, The Ramones, MC5), 1990. He’s released over a dozen records including two major label releases (Polydor Records, Sire Records). He’s done National tours with the likes of Billy Bragg, and The Breeders…and he’s been a main influence on artists such as Kimya Dawson (Juno, 2008 Grammy award wining soundtrack), and Beck.
“We used to go to all the open mikes together. He taught me Daniel Johnston songs on the sidewalk and let me sleep on his couch. He was a great songwriter, a generous friend, and a big influence on my early stuff'” says Beck of Paleface in Annie Leibovitz’s book American Music.
PALEFACE and drummer Monica “Mo” Samalot have been touring from coast to coast in support The Show Is On The Road…performing at festivals such as Pickathon (OR), Floyd Fest (VA, Shakori Hills (NC), Riverbend (TN), and Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion (TN) along artists such as Willie Nelson, Dr.Dog, Blitzen Trapper, Justin Townes Earle, Langhorne Slim, Those Darlins, and Joe Doe and The Saddies, to name a few…. Over the Summer the duo showcased at Non-Comm, a Triple A Radio event, sponsored by WXPN and World Cafe Live (along the likes of, Delta Spirit, Elvis Perkins, Black Joe Lewis, Pete Yorn, Jessica Lea Mayfiield, The Avett Brothers and Heartless Bastards among others), and later in this month they will be showcasing at South By Southwest Festival in Austin! PALEFACE is currently finishing up a follow-up with producer and visual artist, Paul “Ena” Kostabi (Dee Dee Ramone, The Willowz, Psychotica, Youth Gone Mad, White Zombie) to be released in the Fall.

“Triumphant Title for the latest from the New York anti-folkie admired by Beck, and his first album in years that is not for a tiny punk label or a bootleg. It’s best songs are a heady jumble of urban and Americana- musically, and lyrically too” Mojo Magazine
“overdue for recognition” Nashville Scene
“a neo-folk icon” The Flagpole, Athens GA
“Judging by the amiable vibe, any hint of regret over past misdeeds appears relegated to the backburner. With the show on the road, it bodes a most welcome return.” BLURT
“Playing folk music in its simplest form, the pair shined a rare beam of sincerity in a music world bogged down by false glitz and glamour…We should all feel so privileged to be able to get up so close and personal to a musician who can turn the air in the room blue by simply opening his mouth. His words are gorgeous and bloody with heartache, and the effortless way in which he holds a roomful of folks captivated is a beautiful thing.” (Orlando FL, Show Review, by Ink19)
“This band will liven up any room it’s in, slinging the happiness like a drug”, Roanoke Times, VA

this splendid songsmith.” Salisbury Post, NC
“Wow, this guy is amazing…As far as I am concerned there is nothing better then when a band comes into LA and owns the stage. Complete with a sing along and a kinetic and fun energy, PALEFACE devoured their set…In the same breath, he converted a room of skeptics and showed this LA crowd why he is who he is. Complete with a quick background story on how became who he is, PALEFACE stunned a crowd that included a buzz filled with a stomp your feet and clap your hands in a procession of sound that was simply, amazing. Accompanied by Monica Samalot on on drums, this duo held the audience in a musical haze through a spellbound hypntoic aura of touching and rocking songs. Set to the powerful lyrics that fuel PALEFACE’s passion and story telling… an incredible night of music that will be hard to replicate any time soon.” Loudvine.com (Los Angeles Show Review)

“Kind of like Tom Waits and Kim Deal of the Pixies making quirky acoustic folk together” Charlotte Observer
“a perfect piece of folky mood music…echoes the cries of the beatniks and poets seeking the ultimate high without the use of controlled substances. The playing on the album is strong, and the music has a solid groove” Crawdaddy
“Tons of sweat flying energy, damn good songs that stomp and rumble, and a beautiful noise that is spreading to ears far and wide”. The Velvet Rut
“The Show is on the Road is contemplative, but with a lust-for-life, windows down, wind-in-your face, summer album swagger” Honest Tune
“half way through the first song I was in love.” (Richmond VA Show Review by whycantsciencesolvethis.blogspot.com
“Paleface brought their unique and undeniably fun show to the stage as the acoustic guitar/drum duo played songs from their new album “The Show Is On The Road” as well as other tunes. With obvious roots in folk and blues, Paleface brings that familiar feel to his songs but with a new twist that is based on the edginess of their live performance and the rawness of the fact that it is just a duo performing them. One thing that I liked in particular about their set is that they were visibly having a lot of fun playing the show. Paleface was dancing and running around the stage nearly the entire time while Mo was holding it down on the drums and back vocals. This energy was definitely felt and given back by the audience as they danced and sang along with Paleface.”
Lightning100.com (Nashville show review)
“Honky tonk honesty fuels train-yard yarns turning contemporary issues into dustbowl hobo narratives; Paleface’s earth-bound wisdom croons rollicking acoustic tunes, weaving a deeper, understated understanding from everyday aggravations. “Road,” rolls with the punches, unfolding stolen moments over bare-boned anecdotes, uplifting skiffle and friendly encouragement; heartache and hindsight blending into folksy hopefulness.” Maximum Ink Music Magazine
“This was easily one of my favorite band performances from the entire day at FloydFest on Saturday. Paleface, the folkcore duo of Monica ‘Mo’ Samalot on drums and front man and band namesake Paleface on guitar and harmonica put on one of the most entertaining sets of the day at the Blue Ridge to Bayou Dance Tent. I rolled in just in time to see the start of their early Saturday performance and planted myself right in front of the stage speakers to the right side of the stage and marveled.” (Floyd Fest show Review by Sean Harvey, CvilleMuse)
“Paleface’s performance was solid, easily winning over the crowd” Performer Magazine
“Closing the night was PALEFACE a legend of the NYC anti-folk scene… It’s obvious that Paleface has mastered the art of songwriting, bringing to the stage an arsenal of really catchy songs, many of which are lyrically geared towards not worrying and enjoying life. Paleface (and his huge, gruff voice) would be a great addition to any party, or anywhere in general that calls for good times…Paleface delivered a solid, highly entertaining set.” Jezebel Music, NYC
“Daniel Johnston was his mentor, Kramer his producer, and Beck… well, as Ramblin’ Jack Elliot was to young Bob Dylan, so is Paleface to Beck” Urban Folk, NYC
“If Tom Waits is the West Coast hermit of the bizarre and the offbeat, then perhaps his East Coast counterpart is Paleface…” The Daily Times, TN
“Paleface’s smoky, seasoned voice and acoustic, folk/blues style draws comparisons to Tom Waits and Bob Dylan.” The Post And Courier, Charleston SC
“The catchiness of the songs, lyrically and musically, seems to be borne from a genuine lightheartedness rather than forced cleverness. There is not a hint of irony on this record, and its straightforwardness is refreshing. Throughout this solid record there seems to be a tinge of sadness, but also an awareness that he has got his health, his girl, and that he is on the road. Overall, it’s quite enjoyable sharing in that with him.” New Times Miami
“Paleface and drummer Mo Samalot place themselves into the upper echelon of the wave of fantastic Americana acts we’ve seen through NC over the past few years” The Village Idiot, North Carolina
“Last December, when Paleface and Mo charmed the bejeezus outta BLURT during an opening set for the Avett Brothers, we knew we would be fans for life.”, BLURTOnline
“There aren’t a lot of bands I saw twice in 2009. Fewer still are the bands that left me hungering for a third show. In fact, Paleface (and Mo) might be the only act that could lay claim to that mantle, such that it is.”
Justin Vaughn for Cleveland Bachelor
“Paleface’s sweetly ravaged and expressive songs recall writer/singers like Tom Waits, Jeff Tweedy, M Ward and Van Morrison, but his distinctive blend of American music is all his own. ” The Tullahoma News, TN
