Lee’s Listening Stack – Pajama Club – ‘self-titled’
Pajama Club
Self-titled
Independent release
First, a word of warning. Abandon any expectations that might have been heightened by the knowledge that ex-Crowded House helmsman Neil Finn is behind this band. Pajama Club doesn’t resemble any of Finn’s previous projects in the slightest. An album that began on a whim during down time at home with Finn’s wife Sharon, the Pajama Club is strictly intended as a way to left off some steam and simply have fun. It certainly translates that way on record, although it’s unclear how many of Finns’ fans will feel like they’re in on the action. The songs simulate the stuff that qualifies for a pop radio playlist, all giddy, danceable rhythms and seductive sentiments. “Tell me what you want/Show me how to do it/I’ll do anything to you,” the two Finns coo contentedly in a series of sexy come-ons. The club-friendly beats and synth-tinged sound occasionally recalls the percolating pop of ‘80s outfits like Duran Duran, Yaz and others of that ilk, with big beats dominating the material overall. Finn spruces up the arrangements with goosey electronic embellishment, but the frivolous nature of songs like “Diamonds in Her Eyes,” “TNT for 2” and “Go Kart” prevent the album from venturing much beyond its fluffier terrain. “We have all night to have a good time,” they insist on the song “Daylight.” Well maybe so, but only if those pajamas come off at some point. – Lee Zimmerman
