To the Gypsy for Willie 20 years later
When you step off the bus
your slow, easy movement
gifts my mind with open desert scenes
cactus, tequila and rain after a dry summer day
you move through the crowd like a honky-tonk king
your slow, easy movement
gifts my mind with open desert scenes
cactus, tequila and rain after a dry summer day
you move through the crowd like a honky-tonk king
dispatched from some smokey sawdust bar
funny how time has slipped into the lines on your face.
funny how time has slipped into the lines on your face.
Flashbulbs, reaching arms, autograph hounds surround
the cowboy st. nick, they shake around you
you remain still and move into
you remain still and move into
the eye of my hurricane life.
As I shake your hand
I feel the leather of your skin
I mention my texas homeland
your eyes spark stardust
you smile ask my name
(funny how time slips)
your eyes pierce soul-deep
cut through my fan-embarrassed modesty.
Later deep in the night
I will sleep
with dreams of whiskey rivers
and a tequila grin.
