Crowdfunding Campaigns of the Week: Sugarcane Jane and Little Steven Van Zandt
Every month, dozens of artists take to crowdfunding sites like PledgeMusic or Kickstarter to raise funds for their new album project or to offer a pre-order with additional merchandise options. But with so many choices, how to filter through the clutter to find the campaigns most worthy of your time? That’s where I come in. Each week, I will bring you some of the best new roots-oriented crowdfunding or direct-to-fan campaigns that might be of interest. This week, we’ve got pre-orders from one of Americana’s hottest duos and a long overdue new album from a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer.
Sugarcane Jane- Ladders and Edges
In recent years, there’s been a resurgence of interest in the music of north Alabama. Less remembered but no less important is the music of Alabama’s Gulf Coast. One of the best examples of this music’s vitality and wide-ranging influences is Sugarcane Jane. The husband and wife duo of Anthony and Savana Lee Crawford have spent much of the last year touring with the Gulf Coast supergroup Willie Sugarcapps. But on May 19, they return as a duo with Ladders and Edges. For the album, they teamed up with Canadian producer Colin Linden of Blackie & the Rodeo Kings. Backer rewards for the campaign include a promotional CD of alternate mixes from the album, a handwritten lyric sheet, a five album bundle of all of Sugarcane Jane’s works, and the dress worn by Savana on the album cover.
Little Steven Van Zandt is best known to fans as the founding guitarist for Bruce Springsteen’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted backing group, The E Street Band. He is also a successful radio personality, hosting Little Steven’s Underground Garage on Sirius XM radio since 2002. Now Little Steven is readying his first album of solo material in two decades after he reunited with his band The Disciples of Soul in October. Backer rewards include signed copies of Soulfire on both CD and vinyl, a custom voicemail or birthday greeting from Little Steven, and one of his signed and personalized Fender guitars.
