Troy Campbell – Long In The Sun
Troy Campbell is yet another Austin artist whose lack of renown isnt quite commensurate with his talent. His band the Highwaymen moved from Dayton, Ohio, to Austin in the late 1980s and released an excellent cassette that was recently reissued on CD. The band changed its name to Loose Diamonds and made a few more records in the 90s. Some of Campbells past work has been rather erratic, but he hit his stride when he teamed up with producer Gurf Morlix for American Breakdown in 2003. On Long In The Sun, his third solo album, hes supported by a trio that again includes Morlix, and manages to maintain the previous records level of excellence, surpassing it at times. Long In The Sun isnt initially riveting, but it gains impact with increased familiarity. Killing Time In Texas, Ball And Chain, and Woody Guthries little-known Along In The Sun & The Rain (the only cover) are especially worth hearing.
