The Blazing Zoos’ Unlikely Blend of Wit and Remorse
The British aren’t the only ones that have a love and fascination with Americana. That’ appreciation is shared in many parts of the world, from Europe to Asia and beyond. Yet it’s particularly pronounced in the U.K., thanks to a tradition that goes back to the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, an admiration that encompasses country, blues and all other sorts of sounds birthed here in the heartland. However, as is their tack, the English have a unique way of looking at things, and so it’s little wonder that when they tackle those homespun sounds, it sometimes suggests a different perspective. Or in the case of the Blazing Zoos, a bit of tongue in check. Fronted by noted scribe and songwriter Andrew Mueller on vocals and rhythm guitar, the band emulates the sound of old time country, complete with both its humor and its tears in the beers pathos. And while the music often has comedic intents, it’s conveyed so convincingly, it’s hard to tell which part is parody and what’s played straight and sincerely. “It’s Your Own Time You’re Wasting,” “On My Own” and “Still Up At Five” are tales for the lovelorn, each reflecting the usual talking points about the girl that’s gone and the possibility romance will never return. On the other hand, “Country Drinking Song” effectively distills all those sentiments in a trademark beer-soaked ballad that’s plied so convincing, the joke’s not always so apparent. Flawless to a tee, Chocks Way makes a formidable impression.
