New Kevin Brunkhorst album lifts spirits like fine wine
The warm summer glow of Kevin Brunkhorst’s Otherwise album lifts the spirits like fine wine; it sparkles brightly, lighting the darkest corridors. A professor at St. Francis Xavier, Brunkhorst is a guitarist and composer whose music is more focused on melodic hooks and song structures than some of his contemporaries, giving him crossover appeal. Backed by saxophonist John Murphy, bassist Fred Hamilton, and drummer Ed Soph, Brunkhorst has recorded a breezy record that is well-suited for a hot-weather soundtrack.
The title track has soothing, steady, and progressive melody that is comforting to the ears. For those chill-out moments, it’s an essential listen. On “Don’t Explain,” Brunkhorst’s dynamic guitar playing leaps through the speakers, aptly complemented by Soph’s robust drumming. Murphy’s saxophone blends effortlessly in at the middle of the song, unveiling the group’s electrifying chemistry.
“Roll Credits” open and close Otherwise; each has a mission, both of which are skillfully accomplished. The first “Roll Credits” serves as the header and actually denotes the start of the album. It’s mellow, a mood-setting song that will put you in the right environment conducive to listening. The second “Roll Credits” has a more dramatic vibe; it is longer and passionate enough to note the end of a film.
The tunes on Otherwise give off an appeal that showcases creativity and passion. It is an inspiring album that will surely serenade its listeners.
