Mark Mulcahy – In Pursuit Of Your Happiness
There’s an all-star assortment of New England alt-rockers on Mark Mulcahy’s third solo album, including J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. and Joey Santiago of the Pixies. But Mulcahy’s songs are what shine brightest. Although the former Miracle Legion frontman isn’t as well-known as his ’80s peers, Mulcahy continues to wander after his muse with languorous determination. Every few years, he sends forth a collection of beautiful, thoughtful songs that sound simpler than they really are. There’s an eclectic jumble of instruments here; vocally, Mulcahy scats a bit on “Cookie Jar”, hides a grin on “A Smack On The Lips”, and slides easily into the gentle, floating melody of “Nothing But A Silver Medal”. The theme is literal — Mulcahy includes a game board in the liner notes so listeners can pursue their own happiness. In perfect Mulcahy fashion, you win by not wanting to.
