Jan Mulder Reflects Enigmatic, Compelling Sounds of Nature on New Album
The big-throated bellowing that opens “The Bullfrog” will bewilder unsuspecting listeners. It’s a strange way to introduce a song but it is actually the norm on Soundscapes. However, when the saxophone kicks in, breathing heavy and deep, its compositional genius is unveiled. Lively piano and spine-tingling bass reflects the amphibian’s personality – larger-than-life, rambunctious, and enigmatic.
Mulder finds profound inspiration in the most unlikely of subjects. “The Cricket” is stunningly beautiful, brimming with mystery with its crestfallen piano and soaring clarinet, which peeks through the rain clouds like the summer sun. “The Baboon,” on the other hand, is bristling with youthful energy as funky bass lines, jamming piano, swirling sax, and and jumpy drums illustrate wildlife in its most exuberant state.
