As anyone whos attempted to capture a wedding on a camcorder knows, some things are best experienced live. Thats probably the case with The Wedding Dance Of The Widow Bride, the third album from Vancouver accordionist/klezmer revivalist Geoff Berner. The ten tracks here revolve around the act of tying the knot, and just as marriage isnt for everyone, the frenetic first half of the album will test ones patience. Accompanied by violinist Diona Davies and percussionist Wayne Adams, Berner takes a hyper-theatrical approach to his storytelling that, while no doubt enjoyable onstage, can be annoying on record. Stick with it, though, and the albums beat-poet-gone-wild take on old-Europe music starts to charm, and not just because there are enough references to cunnilingus and butt-banging to make Eazy-E blanche. Featuring straight-outta-the-Eastern-Bloc accordion and fiddle, the gloriously staggering waltz Song To Reconcile will resonate with any couple whos watched their parental units interact in a social situation. Is Wedding Dance perfect? Hell no, but thats appropriate, because whens the last time you went to a wedding that was?
