Dutch band Salt Seven resurrect ’70s funk with sweltering energy
Proving that music is indeed a universal language, the Dutch band Salt Seven resurrect the soulful pulse and sweltering energy of ’70s American funk on “Boogie With Us.” A number of contemporary artists who attempt echoing this sound tend to fail on the authenticity scale; they’re either overproduced or simply do not have the musical skills and sense of rhythm to quite pull it off. However, that is not the case with Salt Seven; this group burns hot from the beginning, unleashing one infectious hook after another.
Stanley Medema’s fiery saxophone slices through the air with swagger and sweat; it swirls like a ball of fire, sensual and intoxicating. Elmer Bergstra’s jumpy drums solidify the driving, throbbing backbeat. There’s a melting pot of influences unveiled here, from the pulsating melodies of disco to the crystalline warmth of smooth jazz with added seasoning of Latin and samba. The scorchingly hot funk of guitarist Jeff Sopacua and bassist Henry Sopacua melt the ingredients together.
As far as summer singles go, “Boogie With Us” soaks in the sunshine and generates enough tropical heat to light up any beach party.
