Composer/Bassist Tony CC Displays Remarkable Versatility on New Releases
The startling versatility of composer/bassist Tony CC dispels the myth that jazz artists refuse to bend musical conventions. CC knows such stylistic boundaries as firmly displayed on his trio of recently released singles.
“Blue Line to Old Town” is the most traditional of the three in what is often considered mainstream jazz. Jamming piano and crashing drums propel the exhilarating beat forward as CC’s elastic bass throbs with knife-sharp precision. The combo generates enough heat to melt the sun, a hot groove that stirs the appetite for a full-length menu of same. In a live setting, they probably set off sparks.
“Came Up Short,” on the other hand, is from another universe entirely. CC’s metal roots have emerged from the depths of history, crackling with youthful exuberance. Chunky hard-rock riffs blow through the speakers, complete with a smashing raise-your-fist solo. Keyboards pulsate like liberated prisoners from a jazz-fusion record, and CC attacks his bass with the sweaty persistence of Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
“Robot Fetish” operates like a mash-up of the two, retaining some of the former’s jazzy undertow with the heavy funky bass from the latter.
