a golden swindle
Maybe i’m just old and grumpy. Some charitable types would say maybe i’m just grumpy. Others might suggest i’m just old. Whatever the case…i’ve got to get this off of my chest.
Local radio (cbc vancouver) played and talked up Sarah Mclachlan’s new “single”, One Dream a couple of times yesterday and i was pretty much appalled with what i heard(i refuse to link to it here – i don’t want to encourage anyone to seek it out). While i don’t have Sarah in regular rotation i’ve never written her off as a complete waste of time either. I quite liked her cover (with Jewel i believe) of Gordon Lightfoot’s Song for a Winter’s Night, but then again that material is pretty solid. However, after listening to the steaming pile of shiny, formulaic, lachrymose, rapacious drivel that is One Dream i realise where her career has gone – straight to the bank. This is the musical equivalent of a failed banker’s bonus: it’s a grab for profit where no decent, self-respecting artist would traffic. Maybe she was commissioned to come up with a song to represent the Vancouver games or maybe she’s just anticipating gold, but in either case I found the song both pitiful to behold and painful to listen to. The Olympic “spirit” is indeed alive and well positioned once again to trade fake emotion and false sentiment for bagfuls of money and a chance at gold. Go for that gold Sarah!
