Single Review: Randy Cherkis – “When a Super Hero Falls in Love”
The Man of Steel film might be another forceful reminder of old-fashioned heroism, but finding contemporary songs that echo those sentiments are nearly as rare as Kryptonian life. In pop music, one has to look back to 1981 and Joey Scarbury’s “Theme from The Greatest American Hero (Believe It or Not)” as an iconic reference point. That was also the last year there was, arguably, a Superman movie worth watching until Man of Steel. Singer/songwriter Randy Cherkis probably did not intend his single, “When a Super Hero Falls in Love,” to simultaneously soar with Clark Kent’s alter ego. But timing is everything, and Cherkis has produced the finest homage to costumed crime-fighters since Scarbury. Scarbury’s influence on “When a Super Hero Falls in Love” is perhaps best felt in its emotional tone; the song is certainly uplifting and brimming with warmth and a childlike sense of wonder. Musically, though, Cherkis’ acoustic guitars lean towards country while his likeable voice recalls that of Nick Lowe. The lyrics, “I got these powers I keep secret inside/But my love for you I can’t hide,” plumbs the depths of romance with boyish sweetness. Only a heart of stone, or maybe just Lex Luthor, would walk away unmoved from Cherkis’ cape-covered Valentine.
