Dynamos – Knowledge

Dynamos haven’t been together a long time, but their brief tenure has already laid the building blocks necessary to establish them as one of the most promising rock acts to emerge in recent memory. Singles like last fall’s “Shake, Rattle, and Roll” served to strengthen those credentials from the first while their new single release, “Knowledge”, shows an exponential leap forward – there’s such clear intelligence propelling their songwriting, but they also rock convincingly and give the audience an accessible product that casual and hardcore fans alike will enjoy. Their confidence is palpable. “Knowledge” runs a little over three minutes long and it’s an ideal length for a band that eschews instrumental spotlights in favor of delivering the song to listeners as viscerally as possible. The Los Angeles based five piece’s debut EP Cold Comfort and “Knowledge” hint that this is a band with the staying power to enjoy a long, fruitful career both artistically and commercially.
Nadia E. has a long career ahead of her. She’s a classically trained vocalist, for all intents and purposes, and one cannot help but find it natural that her field of study as a younger lady was opera singing. She has a titanic, mammoth voice that only a genuine artistic sensibility could properly control and Dynamos definitely benefit from her presence of mind as a singer. She inhabits every second her voice moves through in “Knowledge” with conviction and a strong sense of performance alike. Her natural emotiveness communicates the lyrics with a gripping sense of urgency and even the instincts of a storyteller while the aforementioned shading of her vocal, only pushing her pipes when the song stands to gain from that added oomph, plays into what the band is doing around her.
The song sounds like a natural for the stage and even cut live in the studio. There’s a combustible quality to this performance and its moderately uptempo pace promises to explode or run off the rails at any given moment, but it never comes. Instead, “Knowledge” charges forward, head down, and never quite gets up nose to nose with listeners refusing to back down. Instead, Dynamos go for a more mature and considered approach while still embracing all the raucousness inherent to the song and its musical form. The rhythm section provides a fat ballast for the singing and other instruments to tether their performances to while Carlos Barrera and Jacob Mayeda’s guitar playing reel off colorful and biting guitar passages. Dynamos’ first studio release, an EP entitled Cold Comfort, gained them considerable and immediate attention and the recent spate of singles justifies their talents more clearly each time out. The new single “Knowledge” touches on all of their traditional strengths while striking out for and reaching new heights that earlier releases promised would come. With this single release, the band has arrived for listeners like never before and whole new worlds will hopefully open up for them on the back of its success.
