Elevates the old Elton John song from Tumbleweed Connection to an extraordinary level. Elton's original was excellent all those years ago...but, Bettye owns this one now. Lots of pain, emotion and conviction -- but never over the top drama. Her rendition, her interpretation -- perfect. It all works brilliantly. As it should. Music knows no boundaries. And sometimes, it takes a Bettye Lavette to really flesh out the true value of a song -- some may have forgotten or weren't even aware of. I don't think Elton John and Bernie Taupin had this type of version of "Talking Old Soldiers" in mind when they wrote it. But, I know I would be wearing a wide grin if I wrote it and heard it sung this way.
