RP N10 commented on Jela Webb's blog post 'Transatlantic Sessions - Royal Festival Hall (London, UK 2/6/12)'
Nice review.  The RFH show was the first time I'd been in town for the Transatlantic Sessions London gig.  In some ways it's too big to take in, and in another the quality of the performers makes you wish they'd played…

RP N10 commented on Easy Ed's blog post '54 MORE Reasons to Hate The Grammy Awards'
There I was thinking the Grammys were another round of worthless industry backscratching then Easy Ed posts up a list containing many names I'd have expected would have been shoo-ins for Blandest AOR Tosh or whatever.  Maybe time to…

RP N10 replied to Matt Mesa's discussion 'The Jayhawks or Wilco--which show to see?'
Wilco.  The Jayhawks are fine live but their new record's not so great IMO.  Wilco are moving forward and creating.  My 10 € cents.

Just finished 4th time through on Jenny Owen Youngs new album "An Unwavering Band of Light".  Some great songs and some pretty interesting arrangements.  Not sure whether she'd qualify as Americana but as she's American…

RP N10 replied to Brian Morris's discussion 'Gretchen Peters - her new album "Hello Cruel World" drops this week'
Gretchen Peters is probably best known as a writer.  Her credits on allmusic stretch to 5 pages.   Hello Cruel World is her 5th record (after Secret of Life, Gretchen Peters, Trios and Burnt Toast & Offerings).  She…

RP N10 commented on Alan Harrison's blog post 'Tom Russell at Gateshead Old Town Hall'
Tom sold out Cecil Sharp House (420 capacity seated) in North London on a cold Sunday night a couple of weeks ago.  Similar set to Gateshead by the sound of it.  For the first part (he kicked off with Hard Rain>Don't Think Twice) I…

Will be re-acquainting myself with Tom Russell's Mesabi after seeing his show in London tonight. Plus his album with Gretchen Peters "One to The Heart, One To The Head" which I first listened to while driving through an Atlantic storm…

RP N10 replied to Matt Mesa's discussion 'Digital music--is there a method to your madness of buying songs?'
I have an emusic sub in the UK which is just as well because it's still indie oriented so I still get my old plan. A long time ago I took the decision I was going to use it for new music only.  Most new muisc comes out in the UK on a…

Posts from the songwriting front line - some insights into Gretchen Peters' latest batch of songs

Life is pretty busy between work, family, gigs, listening to music and general stuff so it's not often I get beyond the selected blogs and the live discussions here on the ND site.

The other day, on account of being laid up with a heavy cold, I had a rummage through the blogs and came across Gretchen Peters post Woman On The Wheel where she provides some background to this song…

Starting out on a Fantastic Expedition - a new music magazine

Amidst all the doom and gloom surrounding the future of paid-for music writing it’s good to see that the specialist fanzine segment is managing to produce good writing in niche areas.  I was reminded of this by the arrival of the latest edition of UK based magazine “Fantastic Expedition” produced by Jason Smith in Hertfordshire, just North of London.

“Fantastic Expedition” is into…

Keeping It In The Family Pt 3 - The Sibling Acts

At the same time as we’ve had a thread about husband/wife/partner musical teams and now the can-they-can’t-they musical breeding discussion kicked off earlier this week, I’ve been casting my mind back over the shows I’ve been to during 2010 and a sense that I’d seen a lot of sibling acts.  I’ve also been giving some thought to what it is makes these groups a little bit special.

The Mountains & The Trees - Ashburner Club, Hackney, London - 24 May 2010

The night of 24 May I finally got to see The Mountains & The Trees at the second attempt. The show formed part of a folk night at an abandoned pub in Lower Clapton and had the intimacy of a house concert which in a way it was as the pub is the hosts' home.

After a song from the organiser and a set from Otto who performed Brazilian (and at least one Argentinian) folk songs, it was time for TM&TT's first London show.

Jon and Jill started out with 3 songs from the… Continue

Hi, Sorry it's taken me so long to reply. I liked Pocket Satellite. I didn't like the claymation video though.  Looked for a good quality live performance video but they all seemed to be crappy phone videos.

Thanks for the info re BBC 4 singer songwriter series-sounds like it's going to be good. Well done the Beeb-perhaps the 145 quid wasn't too wasted after all!

That's the show... Too bad this is a vinyl rip from a scratchy disc. I've heard it sound super clean with better separation. I lost my copy and am in search of a clean one. This might do for the moment. Thanks.

Thanks for that...Sounds great.. venue that they are playing here is excellent, they played here in 2007... acoustics really good. I see Hank 111 is playing London next month. Don't know if you've listened to him but reckon he'd be well worth a visit, not playing ireland unfortunately.
