As time goes on (and what I mean to say is, as I get older), reissues preoccupy more of my time, money and shelf space. Whether that means I am lost in nostalgia for a presumed better day in music, or whether it reflects the fact that at a discrete chronological point, you no longer are the desired target market for contemporary music, I can't say. But I do know that as most of the record business turns away from the marginal profitability of archival recordings, some clever labels appear to…

In a generally descending order of excellence ...but they are all pretty excellent.
Kathleen Edwards - Voyageur: It is shocking to realize that almost a decade has passed since I first wrote about Edwards for No Depression, just prior to the U.S. release of her debut album Failer. While her subsequent albums delivered on her initial promise,…

The exquisite New Jersey-bred singer-songwriter Nicole Atkins is donating all proceeds from a new version of her song "Neptune City" to storm relief and rebuilding. This piano version of Atkins' ode to her home turf was recorded at Sun Studios in Memphis, but the heart of both the song and the singer are firmly planted in the Jersey shore.
It is a great version of a great song for an even greater cause. You can get the track here for a bargain $2.…

Twenty five years ago last March, I was seated in the waiting room of the A&R department at CBS Records in Manhattan. It was my first trip to New York and one of my first formal forays in writing about music. I was panicked as I waited to interview a label exec for my Honors journalism thesis. How should I act? What should I say or do? Just the usual anxiety one feels (or at least I felt) when I was at that stage when I had picked an intended career but still had no idea what I…

Hi Paul
As a featured contributor to No Depression, I’m particularly keen on getting your feedback for the following – Please forgive the intrusion if you don’t have the time or inclination to reply.
I’ve posted the following to the No Depression discussion board – you can either respond there or alternatively drop me a line at shatchsurvey1@yahoo.co.uk
Thanks very much for your time
Kind regards,
Steve
My name is Steve Hatch and I’m currently conducting research for my Master’s in Songwriting at Bath Spa University in Bath, England (though I happen to be an ex-pat Georgia boy). I would be extremely grateful if you could find the time to listen to the track (link below) and answer the 2 accompanying questions. The more detail, the better of course (more to say in my final analysis) – but all feedback will be useful and very much appreciated.
Sadly, as this is an academic pursuit, there is a deadline. Please reply by May 20th if at all possible so that I can have time to chew over your response and include it in my final write-up.

"If I were to trace the genealogy of the country music Outlaw, it would start with Bobby Bare, roll through Willie & Waylon and that whole gang, follow Cash through the late 90′s, and end up in the country music underground with people like Peewee Moore as possibly the perfect example of the Outlaw lineage in the present day"

I am currently in my third year studying popular music and performance and am writing my dissertation about powerful females in music, focusing deeply on Joni Mitchell and Alanis Morissette. I have read your book 'Alanis Morissette - A Biography', but was wondering if it would be possible to speak to you directly please as I would love to hear more of your opinions on the topic. This would be of great help to my dissertation.
I think you should have my email address as I typed it in when becoming a member of the site, so would probably be best contacting me that way, thankyou.
I look forward to hearing form you,
Hannah Merrick.
All the best,
CB
She was a fantastic songwriter...
