Pay It Forward

If anyone out there made a holiday or New Year's resolution to spend the coming 12 months committing random acts of graciousness, here is an early opportunity.

Serge Bielanko, of the group Marah, yesterday safely escaped with his wife, two children and dogs from a blaze in the home they had been renting and renovating in the village of Walker Township in Pennsylvania. News coverage of the blaze…

The Beach Boys' Smile and the roads not taken

Scattered within the 140-plus tracks straining at the confines of the Beach Boys’ massive new box set, The Smile Sessions, there are a few non-musical bits of nonsense called “Psycodelic Sounds.” In a couple of these silly interludes, Brian Wilson pretends to have fallen inside a piano and later become trapped inside a microphone. The clips are likely remnants from an abandoned notion of making the original Smile LP a kind of comedy record, but retrospectively…

Farewell to The Pearl

Forgive me, this is off topic sort of...

There comes a moment in every life when a young person must decide how they intend to make their living and make their way in the world. In the words of Leonard Cohen, we are asked to “choose an ugly particular from the range…

Hi Paul

As a featured contributor to No Depression, I’m particularly keen on getting your feedback for the following – Please forgive the intrusion if you don’t have the time or inclination to reply.

I’ve posted the following to the No Depression discussion board – you can either respond there or alternatively drop me a line at shatchsurvey1@yahoo.co.uk

Thanks very much for your time

Kind regards,

Steve

My name is Steve Hatch and I’m currently conducting research for my Master’s in Songwriting at Bath Spa University in Bath, England (though I happen to be an ex-pat Georgia boy).  I would be extremely grateful if you could find the time to listen to the track (link below) and answer the 2 accompanying questions.  The more detail, the better of course (more to say in my final analysis) – but all feedback will be useful and very much appreciated.

Sadly, as this is an academic pursuit, there is a deadline.  Please reply by May 20th if at all possible so that I can have time to chew over your response and include it in my final write-up.

            The track: http://soundcloud.com/stevehatch

1)     Which artist/band(s) would you say the track is most similar to and why?

2)     Which genre(s) would you say the track belongs to and why?

"If I were to trace the genealogy of the country music Outlaw, it would start with Bobby Bare, roll through Willie & Waylon and that whole gang, follow Cash through the late 90′s, and end up in the country music underground with people like Peewee Moore as possibly the perfect example of the Outlaw lineage in the present day"

Hello Paul.

I am currently in my third year studying popular music and performance and am writing my dissertation about powerful females in music, focusing deeply on Joni Mitchell and Alanis Morissette. I have read your book 'Alanis Morissette - A Biography', but was wondering if it would be possible to speak to you directly please as I would love to hear more of your opinions on the topic. This would be of great help to my dissertation.

I think you should have my email address as I typed it in when becoming a member of the site, so would probably be best contacting me that way, thankyou.

I look forward to hearing form you,

Hannah Merrick.

Glad to know you look back on those days fondly Paul. Kind of lost on the new crowd I'm afraid. Doin' some solo show things along w/ a couple of band line-ups to keep sane...
All the best,
CB
