About No Depression

This website was launched in Feb. 2009 as a way to continue more than a decade of No Depression's coverage and service to the Americana and roots music community.

However, long before this site was born, No Depression was launched as a quarterly print magazine covering alternative- country music in 1995. The publication was co-founded by Peter Blackstock and Grant Alden, who brought in Kyla Fairchild as a co-publisher shortly thereafter. Over the course of thirteen years, No Depression gradually grew into one of the nation's most prominent and broad-ranging bimonthly music publications until it ceased print operations in June 2008. Along the way, No Depression received Utne Reader Independent Press Awards for Arts & Literature coverage, and was cited as one of the nation's Top 20 magazines of any kind in 2004 by the Chicago Tribune.

No Depression Is Getting a Facelift: A Note About What's Around the Bend

Ever since we announced that No Depression had been acquired by FreshGrass back in March, we’ve heard from many of you with questions, concerns, and ideas about the future of this website and the community that gathers here. We created a forum topic at that time so we could organize these comments and refer to them frequently, which we have done as we’ve developed…

Contest: Interview Gary Louris, Win the Jayhawks' Deluxe Editions of Sound of Lies, Smile, and Rainy Day Music

(Note: This contest is now closed.  Thanks for all your entries!)

The Jayhawks have long been one of the most beloved bands in the roots, alt-country, and Americana spectrum. Their early albums were some of the most influential in the form and, as they moved from a decidedly alt-country bent into the realms of cleaner rock and pop, they cemented their place among the definitive practitioners of the…

Contest: Interview Old Crow Medicine Show and Win a Copy of Remedy

(Note: Thank you all for your responses. This contest is now closed.)

It could be argued that Old Crow Medicine Show's song "Wagon Wheel" is one of the most frequently covered songs of the millennial folk and roots music boom. The tune, which began its life under the pen of Bob Dylan and was polished off by OCMS, certainly boosted the band to stringband stardom, such as it is. Since then, OCMS has forged a career at the forefront of a new folk revival, sawing and…

Win a Copy of the Compilation Album All My Friends: Celebrating the Songs and Voice of Gregg Allman

[NOTE: This contest is now closed. Congratulations to Jeff Fister, Lynne Patterson and Jeff Newport, who will receive a copy of this album. Thanks to everyone who entered!]

If Americana music had a recipe of influences, it's safe to say it would include a significant serving of the Allman Brothers Band. As one of the leading forces in what's typically considered Southern Rock, the Allmans blurred the line between country music and rock and roll, using sweet and infectious…

Just noticed you still have some back-issues for sale. I was an original subscriber and am missing only a couple of issues I think. Have been meaning to track the missing issues down for years. I think I will break them out this weekend and see what I need. Hope you still have copies in your archives.

Loved that MAG but I love your 'lectric edition just as much. Keep on keeping on.

Is there a way to stop people posting auto start videos.  There's one starts up now when I go to the ND home page.  Took me a while to work out where it was coming from as it drowned out the music I was listening to at the same time.  Probably one of those street team things. Thanks

Just subscribed today!  First became aware of Marty in the mid seventies at the old Livonia, Georgia bluegrass festivals when he was with Lester's band.  Been a big fan ever since!  All the teen girls (and my wife) went crazy when he was on stage!

I would like to get the word out about the 2012 Oak Grove Folk Music Festival (www.oakgrovefestival.com) on 8/3/12, 8/4/12 & 8/5/12 at the Oak Grove Theater in Verona, VA.

Featured acts include:

John McCuthceon

The Steel Wheels

Tracy Grammer

Sierra Hull & Highway 111

Michael Reno Harrell

Chamomile and Whiskey

This festival, going on for 33 years, is the best small festival you never heard of and would be a good excuse to visit the Shenandoah Valley and Staunton, VA. (www.visitstaunton.com). Come find out why Smithsonian magazine listed Staunton as a top ten small town in the country!
