Will Hoge is one of the hardest working songwriters in roots music. Having maintained a formidable solo career since releasing his debut studio album Carousel in 2001, he struck gold when mainstream country act Eli Young Band recorded and charted a number one single with his song “Even If It Breaks Your Heart” in 2011.
Now Hoge is preparing to release Anchor, his 11th studio album, on August 11. In advance of the album’s release, Hoge shared new tune “Little Bit of Rust,” a duet with none other than Sheryl Crow. While Hoge has explored Americana, rock, and everything in between in the past, “Little Bit of Rust” is hardscrabble country through and through, from Crow’s twangy vocal harmonies to the song’s primary metaphor, which likens an imperfect relationship to an “old Chevrolet” that just needs a little cleaning up. While Crow doesn’t get a verse of her own, it’s still a sturdy duet, with her practiced lilt nicely complementing Hoge’s gravelly croon.
