California based trio, Yellow Red Sparks, yesterday debuted the video for their new single, A Play To End All Plays on NPR’s taste-making site, All Songs Considered.
A dark and theatrical portrayal of a seemingly doomed relationship, the video provides a powerful visual and accompaniment to the already haunting track. Directed by the talented Claire Marie Vogel, we see an obliging and unknowing individual say, “I Do,” during the creepiest wedding ceremony of all time. The track’s chorus is backed by a choir of children, reminiscent of the eery 1960’s film, “Village of The Damned,” further adding to the imagery.
A Play To End All Plays is taken from the band’s self-titled debut, and a track which, for the band, “really stands on it’s own from the rest of the record.” It’s a mature release for principal songwriter, Joshua Hanson, who had originally performed under the moniker of Yellow Red Sparks as a solo artist, but eventually formed with fellow bandmates Sara Lynn Nishikawa and Goldy.
With a sound that buries its roots deeper than fellow folk artists, it’s obvious that there is more substance and depth to Yellow Red Sparks than other debuts, and A Play To End All Plays is a stellar example.
