Various Artists – Red Hot + Bothered: The Indie Rock Guide to Dating
As the subtitle suggests, and given the presence of such college-radio faves as Built to Spill, the Grifters and the Verlaines, this record doesn’t really have any business being reviewed in this magazine. Except that nestled amongst the modern rockers are Kelly Willis and Son Volt’s Jay Farrar, dueting on a slowed-down, three-quarter-time version of the Townes Van Zandt classic “Rex’s Blues”. Quite simply, it’s the best song I’ve heard all year, a must for any No Depression collection. If you’d rather not spring for the CD, or if you’re still a vinyl buff, the album was also released as a two-volume series of 10-inches; the Farrar/Willis cut is on Volume 2.
