There’s nothing that makes me happier than a new Laura Veirs…and you can preview two tracks for nothin’
Oh my…Laura Veirs is back. Several months ago I thought she disappeared on me until a community member steered me to her last EP “Two Beers Veirs”, which was more of an alt-trad-Americana (new term?) thing of beauty than anything she had put out previously. Now she’s back to work with a CD coming out on January 10th on her own boutique label called Raving Marching Band Records.

I think it’s Paste Magazine…too lazy to look it up…that has already called it the best of 2010. Aren’t they clairvoyant?
Part of me wants to make this a review, but I think I’ll let someone who is more skilled at it have a go. And I’ve been so excited this afternoon to preview the full album that I keep skipping back and forth from track to track which isn’t very reviewer-like. But I’ll tell you this….it’s rich with textures and sounds and finger picking and alternate tunings and strong voice.
Wanna know how I discovered Laura a few years ago? Probably not…but she looks just like my friend Cedar from Seattle…or the other way around. When I saw her CD at Amoeba a few years back I had to have it just because. Now that Laura isn’t wearing those plastic-rimmed glasses she used to wear, I’m thinking she doesn’t really look like Cedar that much after all. But then again, they both went to college in Minnesota, so there’s that.
