The Bushwhackers – Vintage Australiana
Inspired by Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span, The Bushwhackers Band played “folk rock” versions of Australian bush ballads. The music is mainly from the Irish tradition (and not a million miles from Newfoundland’s Great Big Sea, amongst others). This clip is from 1977. The percussion instrument is a “lagerphone”, de rigeur in Australian bush music and getting its sound from the tops from beer bottles. “Lachlan Tigers” borrows a Scots tune and – like many Australian songs – is about shearing sheep. (That’s the late Pete Farndon on bass. He played on one Bushwhackers album before joining The Pretenders.)
