So much of the magic Buddy and Julie Miller make emanates from their charming Nashville home. Their latest album, Breakdown on 20th Ave. South, was recorded in their bedroom there, and Buddy’s downstairs studio (which you can tour here with Aaron Lee Tasjan!) has recorded many albums we know and love, including by The War and Treaty, Solomon Burke, Emmylou Harris, and more. All along, these musical moments have been witnessed by Buddy and Julie’s menagerie of pets. When we asked the couple to give us a glimpse into their lives, they wanted to introduce these family members, all Very Good Boys and Girls.
As Buddy tells us, “We have had many animals in our family … Winkie, Tinkie, Amos, PeeWee, BigHead, Hoboken, Toe, Mama, Peepo, Mudpie, Nanie, KittyMan, Tousie, and Hooray. I’ve maybe forgotten a few. The dogs love the cats and the cats love the dogs.”
And we love them all (especially, we’re going to be honest, Hooray, as you can see in the main photo with this post). - Having a meeting. Mama, PeeWee, Hoboken, and Toe Mama escaped during a rare Nashville snowstorm. In the midnight hour Julie was heard shouting “Mama” up and down our block. Some of our neighbors have moved away since.

- Bighead was the wild, hissing, spitting, blood-drawing neighborhood feral cat that Julie was inexplicably drawn to and tamed until all he did was sit on her lap and drool.
