The FreshGrass Festival returns to North Adams, Massachusetts, this fall with another outstanding lineup. The 13th annual event — produced by No Depression‘s nonprofit publisher, the FreshGrass Foundation — will take place at the massive contemporary art museum Mass MoCA Sept. 22-24. In line with the Foundation’s mission to support “innovative grassroots music,” this year’s festival will present a range of the best in roots music.
Molly Tuttle, fresh off winning the Best Bluegrass Album Grammy award for City of Gold, is among this year’s headliners. Shakey Graves, who began his career as a semi-nomadic folk musician with a kick drum built into a suitcase and has evolved into a bona fide rock star, also tops the festival poster. FreshGrass favorites and late-night set champions Devil Makes Three return as well.
Many musicians who have long graced the pages of No Depression are also slated to perform this year. Bands like Drive-by Truckers and singer-songwriters like Lucinda Williams are slated to perform. And Béla Fleck, who will be featured prominently in the forthcoming Summer 2024 issue of the journal, will also play a special set with Antonio Sánchez and Edmar Castañeda.
Spanning two-and-a-half days, FreshGrass | North Adams always creates a sustainable, communal environment for attendees to enjoy roots music. Two large stages, the main stage and the No Depression stage, anchor the grounds, and a smaller stage for up-and-coming bands is set up near the central vendor space. Check out previous festival recaps from 2021, 2022, and 2023.
