Robyn Ludwick Video: Hollywood
Yesterday, Robyn Ludwick released her video for the song Hollywood, one of the strongest songs on one of the strongest albums of last year, Out Of These Blues. My review of that record is here.
So often artists are reduced to pantomiming their songs for the camera or just lip-synching the studio song in a different context for variety’s sake. Here, the director took another tack with Ms. Ludwick singing the song as a young woman provides the action. The relationship between the singer and the subject of the video is unclear as the action unfolds, and the whole thing ends with a slightly strange lip-synching twist.
It is interesting how you get one feel for a song just listening to it and another from the alternate narrative provided by the video. Ms. Ludwick has strong features and a real presence, and the young actress was well chosen to mirror those features a little as a late teenager. In the end the video has me re-thinking the song lyrics. Not in some artificial way, either. Very nice job by the producer/writer/director of this video.
