Rhino Handmade reloads Richard & Linda Thompson’s Shoot Out The Lights
Richard & Linda Thompson’s potent and epochal 1982 classic Shoot Out The Lights is getting the double-disc reissue treatment from Warner’s online-only imprint Rhino Handmade. The set is released on Oct. 20.
The original album, an unflinching look at the downside of love and by critical consensus one of the top releases of the 1980s, is expanded with a live disc recorded during the legendary tour in support of the album — a tour which saw the couple’s faltering relationship dissolve in acrimony, but which also, according to legend, inspired some remarkably intense performances. The live material includes covers of Hank Williams’ “Honky Tonk Blues” and Bob Dylan’s “I’ll Keep It With Mine.”
Apparently not included in this set is singer Gerry Rafferty’s shelved 1980 version of the album, which has circulated among fans for many years. Rafferty had produced a version of the album for the Thompsons, but those recordings were set aside and the final, released version was made up of re-recordings helmed by Joe Boyd.
