No Depression Sessions at AmericanaFest: Cristina Vane and Bronwyn Keith-Hynes
Bronwyn Keith-Hines, left, and Cristina Vane
Watch Sicilian-American-Guatemalan musician Cristina Vane join forces with the fiddle royalty of Bronwyn Keith-Hynes at Jaan’s House in Nashville during AmericanaFest 2023. We’ve crossed paths with each of these inimitable artists in other dazzling configurations over the years, so we were ecstatic to host a session featuring ’em both in the same room.
First up is the title track from Vane’s 2022 album Make Myself Me Again, featuring an opening slide guitar lick that’d probably make Ry Cooder nod and say, “Oh damn. Nice.” In addition to playing on this session, Keith-Hynes also contributes to two of the songs on Vane’s record, which also features contributions from Keith-Hynes’ Golden Highway bandmate Kyle Tuttle and a half dozen more heavy hitters.
Keith-Hynes takes over vocal duties on the Waylon Jennings song “Lookin’ for a Feeling,” featured on the 1978 duet album Waylon & Willie. Up until this session, we’ve exclusively known Keith-Hynes as a fiddle player. It is an absolute delight to see her exploring her vocal talent here, and we eagerly await her 2024 album that further showcases her voice. (You can get a taste from the album’s recently released first single, “Can’t Live Without Love,” here.)
For the final song of this session, Vane trades her National Resonator for clawhammer banjo on her original composition “River Roll,” a second offering from Make Myself Me Again. This is one of the two tunes featuring Keith-Hynes on the record, and a perfect song to wrap our session in style.
