My favorite song today
Right now, I’m sitting at my desk in my kitchen/livingroom, looking out the window and over the trees to a clear blue sky. It’s rained a little most days this week and we’re supposed to get snow tomorrow night. I can’t help but bring this verse to mind:
Tomorrow may rain with sorrow
here’s a little time we can borrow
Forget all our troubles in these moments so few
Right now, all that we really have to do
Is have ourselves a heavenly day
Yeah, Patty Griffin. When I saw her at the Moore Theater on one of the rainiest nights I have ever experienced in my now five and a half years in Seattle, she noted that she wrote that song for her dog. I’m currently dog-less, but I know exactly the feeling – dog curled up on a hot hard porch, sitting on the steps with a cup of coffee, watching the day go by. It feels good. I love playing this song just to be reminded that there are days when there’s nothing to say, when all there is is looking at the sky and the trees, sharing some quiet time with the dog. There are days when that’s enough. Most days are too full of other stuff and I find playing this song slows me down somehow.
I grew up in Florida, so I know well the pleasure of a clear blue sky. We don’t get a whole heck of a lot of them here in Seattle, but when we do, I think of this song. Here she is doing it:
