Last Thoughts: sxsw and The Cathedral of Junk
Before the impressions fade and while my ears still ring… Jon Langford, Doug Sahm, the Silos, Olson and Louris and more:
We climbed into the Cathedral of Junk until there was nothing but blue sky above. Through sun glints from spinning CDs, hung like too-big beaded curtains. Past dirt bikes that once blapped and roared, now bolted to rebar, rusted where the chrome wasn’t tinfoil plastered simulating shine. My friend Sev and I paused by a typewriter filled with floppy disks, posed for portraits by the pipes, wiring, auto parts and pre-digital doodads that make a shrine to cultural and commercial impermanence. I was in Austin for sxsw music, which, due to sheer volume (in both senses), is a magpie’s mission, too. With a bit of the past here, something new and shiny there, I built my own teetering impression of a sprawling enterprise.
