KEXP and Seattle Center present No Depression Night 2012
Last summer, you may recall, we teamed up with KEXP and Seattle Center to present “No Depression Night” during their summer concerts at the Mural Amphitheater at Seattle Center. That lineup included Shane Tutmarc, Ravenna Woods, Pickwick, Drew Grow & the Pastors Wives, and it was a fun chance to celebrate the regional music scene and its ongoing contributions to the Americana/roots/indie/alt/whatever scene.
So, with that in mind, we look forward to building on that foundation with a collection of more great artists for 2012. This lineup (below) pulls from some of the best talent in the Pacific Northwest and beyond (Shovels + Rope are coming up all the way from South Carolina).
Check out some clips of all the artists on tap for this year, below. In the meantime, here are the basic details:

SHOVELS AND ROPE (Charleston, SC):
Borne of the vibrant Charleston, South Carolina, music scene, Shovels + Rope takes a creative approach to furthering the tradition of folk music. Built on solid and simple instrumentation (any combination of various junkyard “percussion” items, guitars, harmonicas, and two voices), these two have been generating quite a lot of buzz around the folk and roots circuit the past year or so.
SALLIE FORD AND THE SOUND OUTSIDE(Portland, Ore.):
Sandwich somewhere between the aesthetic of the Avett Brothers and Billie Holliday, Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside are working hard to stretch the confines of American roots and indie rock music. Born in Asheville, NC, Ford has made her way in the Portland music scene since 2006.
LEGENDARY OAKS (Seattle, Wash.):
Bucking the rootsy trends of Seattle’s ongoing love affair with Americana, local band Legendary Oaks stand staunchly on the indie rock end of the spectrum. Granted, there’s a fiddle involved, but this is rainy day in the mountains rock to be sure. (Seattle music blog SoundOnTheSound went so far as to call them “The Pixies with a fiddle.” That about says it all.)
FLY MOON ROYALTY(Seattle, Wash.):
Fly Moon Royalty may not be the band you’d expect to see on a No Depression stage, but you’d also be hard-pressed to truly separate the roots of American music from that of truth-telling hip-hop. Besides, these guys throw down onstage and are sure to convert more than a few folks to their soulful imaginative approach to music.
