John Prine Leads Roots Music Honors at 63rd Grammy Awards
Even without a full-scale red carpet, the Grammys went on, celebrating a year of music like no other.
The Sunday afternoon Premiere Ceremony for the 63rd annual awards was virtual, with pre-recorded studio performances and nominees waiting live on videoconference connections to hear who won in their category. That brought with it all the familiar trappings of Zoom calls — bad lighting, poor connections that made voices sound like robots, unintentional muting, and awkward delays — but also glimpses inside the winners’ homes and studios and charming scenes of celebrating with family.
The main, prime-time event, hosted by Daily Show’s Trevor Noah, had a limited audience, widely spaced and wearing masks to coordinate with their red carpet-worthy #lewks. Taylor Swift and Black Pumas were among the live performances, and the late John Prine, Little Richard, and Kenny Rogers were included among tributes to musicians — more than 1,000 of them — who’d passed away in the past year. The Station Inn in Nashville was one of the venues featured in segments reading out nominees and revealing winners from all over the country.
A list of winners of interest to roots music fans is below. Albums and songs eligible for this edition of the Grammys had a release date between Sept. 1, 2019, and Aug. 31, 2020. You can view the full list at Grammy.com.
