Jackson Hole, Wyoming gives us Screen Door Porch
Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Perhaps not the first place you think of when you thinking of teeming indie scenes or even Americana music. But why not? The wide open spaces, the dramatic profile of the Grand Tetons and vast sweeps of lonely territory would seem to provide the perfect backdrop for lonesome, dramatic Americana. And if Screen Door Porch is any indication, Jackson Hole has done just that. The indie Americana outfit Screen Door Porch is based around the songwriting and vocals of partners (in life and music), Aaron Davis and Seadar Rose (now if that isn’t a name custom made for an Americana star, I don’t know what is). Their music is spacious and atmospheric while maintaining a certain western slink not least owing to Seadar Rose’s sultry vocals. Comparisons to Lucinda Williams, Whiskeytown, and Tift Merritt hit the nail on the head.
Recorded in Austin, Texas at ramble Creek studio, The Fate and the Fruit is their sophomore release officially due out on May 1st, but radio stations have already begun spinning them across the nation. And the band has kindly made their first three tracks available for streaming here. And! To celebrate their radio release, they’re offering a free download of “Devil’s Honey”, which is my favorite track of the album. Do yourself a favor and go download it and just listen to that vocal – pretty but with a little danger to it as well. Seadar Rose has something of a Gillian Welch vibe in Gillian’s darker moments (I’m thinking “One Monkey” and the like.). And if that’s not a good recommendation I don’t know what is.
Voted one of the top bands in Jackson Hole, Screen Door Porch is surely appreciated in their home state, and if their upcoming touring schedule is any indication, they are about to make a big splash in the other 49. Check it out.
