Elizabeth Cook’s “Gospel Plow” and Letterman Performance
The indefinable Elizabeth Cook has a new digital only EP, “Gospel Plow” that was released on June 12, available on Amazon and iTunes. The CD is available only at her live shows and on her website.
In 2011, Ms. Cook was asked to participate in Strawberry Music Festival’s Sunday morning gospel show. While she reluctantly agreed, by the time she was halfway through her set, she said she was surprised by how much she was moved by this music. Perhaps she shouldn’t have been; it reconnected her with music that was central to her Florida upbringing — and her West Virginia roots. She was moved enough to record a seven song EP of some of her favorite Southern Gospel songs, including a cover of Velvet Underground’s “Jesus”.
Ms. Cook and her band, husband Tim Carroll on guitar and Bones Hillman (Midnight Oil) on bass, will be hitting the road this summer, adding a touch of gospel to the proceedings.
In the meantime, here’s her June 14 appearance on David Letterman’s June 14 Late Show performing “Hear Jerusalem Calling:”
