Dhani Harrison at The Crocodile in Seattle

Dhani Harrison arrived in Seattle on a cold rainy evening to play at the legendary Crocodile to introduce his newest album, IN//PARALLEL, with a sold out show. If you’re not familiar with Dhani Harrison, his pervious band was thenewno2, which put out several albums including the soundtrack for “Beautiful Creatures.”

With IN//PARALLEL, Harrison explores a variety of dreamlike compositions that sonically expand and envelop you with eastern Indian influences and rhythmic beats. With the opening track from the album, “Never Know,” you could wonder if Harrison is paying homage to his father, George Harrison, and his song “Within You, Without You” by The Beatles.

As Dhani Harrison hit the stage, truthfully I wasn’t sure what to expect. I had seen him before with thenewno2 at Coachella in 2009 and again at Bumbershoot in 2012. As the band kicked off their set with the song “Summertime Police” from the new album, the energy in the venue swayed with the music.

As I had previewed the new album before the show, I expected a somewhat mellow mood, but this band had the songs dialed in at full throttle. This music had an energy that captured your attention and grabbed you.

Being the son of an iconic musician like George Harrison, Dhani brought his own unique voice to the stage. I have now seen several Beatle offspring perform, and each has been able to carry his own weight. Sean Lennon, James McCartney, and now Dhani Harrison have done well in creating their own musical voice.

To close out the evening, Harrison performed The Stooges’ “I Wanna Be Your Dog” as a fierce encore. Of note, Harrison announced that the guitar he was playing belonged to his friend Eddie (as in Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam), and that it was the guitar that Tom Petty played at the “Concert for George” memorial concert in 2002.
