Death of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Designer
You mightn’t know his name, but you know his work.
Storm Thorgerson, the graphic designer, artsist and photographer whose work is inextricably linked with Pink Floyd, has passed away, aged 69.
His best known work was the iconic 1973 cover of Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon.
Born in Middlesex, England, Thorgerson was a school mate of Pink Floyd founders Syd Barrett and Roger Waters.
Truly part of the Pink Floyd family, he befriended guitarist David Gilmour in his teens, and was best man at Gilmour’s wedding.
Apart from 15 covers for Pink Floyd, Thorgerson also designed covers for Led Zeppelin, Peter Gabriel, 10cc and the Alan Parsons Project.
After recovering from a stroke in 2003, he continued to work.
Recent album covers include the Steve Miller Band, Umphree’s McGee and Mars Volta.
Thorgerson died peacefully after battling an undisclosed form of cancer for several years.
