Dave Alvin & The Guilty Ones – Houston Continental Club 7/15/2011
Dave Alvin & The Guilty Ones put on a great show last night at the Continental Club in Houston, Texas.
Touring in support of his new release, “Eleven Eleven”, this was a perfect venue to leave the acoustic side at home and let the electric side have a little fun.
Being a blues historian, Dave Alvin appreciates the rich blues history of Houston, Texas. “Johnny Ace Is Dead” from the new record describes the Christmas night in Houston when Johnny Ace met his maker after he “put a 22 pistol right up to his head”.
Dave Alvin’s blistering guitar work highlighted the new tunes as well as old favorites like “Ashgrove”, “Marie Marie”, “Out of Control”, “Dry River”, “Abilene” and “Fourth of July”.
Two of the new songs now have new meaning for me since learning last night that “Black Rose Of Texas” and “Run Conejo Run” were written about his late close friends Amy Farris and Chris Gaffney.
The Guilty Ones – husband and wife rhythm section Brad Fordham on bass / Lisa Pankratz on drums, and Chris Miller on electric guitar were outstanding throughout.
I highly recommend this show to anyone who has the opportunity to enjoy it.
