American Gun “Devil Showed Me His Hand”
South Carolina based roots rock band American Gun have a new album coming your way, Devil Showed Me His Hand the bands third full length (there is also a “demo” album – that you can get through eMusic), the album will be available from December 1st and gets released in a collaboration with the Jangly Records collective and the bands own label Step Out of the Line Records. The band Drew Hoose (drums, percussion), Kevin Kimbrell (bass), Todd Mathis (vocals, electric guitar, acoustic guitar ), Donald Merckle (vocals, acoustic guitar), Noel C. Rodgers (electric guitar, vocals) for the album the band have fleshed out the sound with guest players adding banjo, pedal steel, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, gob iron and keys.
The guys have supported the likes of Lucero, Drivin’ N Cryin’, Jason Isbell, The Bottle Rockets, Shooter Jennings and Robbie Fulks and those influences have all being absorbed into the bands own work, so no surprise I’ve taken an instant liking to this record, plenty of rough and tumble alternative country and rock.
13 Women kicks off this eleven track album, it’s a catchy rock number and does the job in getting your immediate attention, lots of dirty guitar and swagger, the brakes come on for track two Girl in Texas which follows a more relaxed path, strumming along roots now showing with added banjo, getting the track sequencing correct for an album is a vital element, this one pulls it off nicely as it rocks and rolls in all the right places, a thoroughly enjoyable listen with the band clearly at ease and enjoying themselves, one for a Saturday night – well almost as the album ends with a curve ball in the closing gospel track Are You Ready
Here’s a couple of my favourite tracks from the album for you to stream, more at the links below
