Album Review: Knifekick – This Could Be Forever EP
Summer might be over, but you don’t have to let it just yet. Knifekick’s This Could Be Forever EP is a great way to ease the transition into the upcoming cooler weather. Knifekick is the solo project of NYC-based Matt Gorny, and this debut EP is an accumulation of his specialties – writing great songs that people can relate (and dance along) to.
The opening song, the title track of the EP, is warm and energetic. This is the kind of track that reels you in and keeps you wanting more, which is great since there are 5 more great songs to follow. “VCR” is also fun and full of energy, but in a different way. This cover of the song by the xx has a driving pop rock feel with some underlying twists that make it stand out as a Knifekick track. Don’t let the “doo doo doo’s” fool you – this song is pure quality. “Wanna Be With You” takes a step away from the previous tracks. This one has hints of reggaeton that will make you want to dance and sing along. “All About Love” is just that – all about love. It’s upbeat and super catchy but it has substance behind it. It’s a feel-good jam that can bring you back from any bad mood. Knifekick brings out the bass for “100% Love.” This track has more of an electronic feel while still keeping things light and fresh. The closing track, “No One Like You” starts out sounding like Sixpence None The Richer’s “Kiss Me,” but after a few seconds, it turns into a song all its own. This one seems to be the most self-reflective lyrically. This song sounds like something you would hear in a movie montage where the main character is about to embark on a life-changing journey. Listen to Knifekick’s This Could Be Forever EP and think about the good things in life – you’ll be glad you did.
This EP includes themes of love, fun, happiness, and inner peace, all dispersed throughout 6 different and energetic songs. While these themes could easily be generic, Knifekick puts them together and turns them into something much more. His unique vocals and style definitely help this EP stand out. This EP is great for those who love indie music with an energetic pop feel, and for those who like music that makes them feel good and tap their feet. On his own, Matt Gorny is an award-winning songwriter who has had songs featured in several TV shows and indie films. Based on his debut This Could Be Forever EP, it’s no wonder he’s accomplished as much as he has so far. It’s clear from this EP that this is only the beginning.
