1) FOUR LOCAL FESTIVALS THIS SATURDAY: 2 FREE, 2 CHARITY BENEFITS
+
Saturday, July 17, brings fine choices for outdoor music festivals, and two of ‘em are in San Pedro, and both of those are free.
+
The 2nd annual “SEA SHANTIES FESTIVAL” runs 10 am-5 pm Saturday, and it’s a Guide “Show-of-the-Week” pick. The free maritime music and song festival is at Point Fermin Park Band Shell, corner of Gaffey St & Shepard St, San Pedro. Info, SeaShantys@AOL.com. It’s a day of music “by and about seafarers, sailors, pirates, navy battles, shipwrecks, mermaids, pleasures of the harbor, ghost ships, fishing, working, and whaling.” Point Fermin Park is open to the public, with no admission charge for the park or this event. Park has picnic tables with barbecue grills, mature shade trees and beautiful ocean vistas. And you can take a break and tour the lighthouse. Band shell has bench seats; bring your own folding chairs and blankets for comfort and flexibility. Eye patch and parrot optional. Fun for the whole family.
+
PLUS, you can get a Friday evening early start, July 16, 7-10:30 pm, before Saturday’s “SEA SHANTIES FESTIVAL” with the show at a popular San Pedro venue, as “SEA CHANTIES: AN EVENING WITH SIMON SPALDING & JAMES HENDRICKS” sets sail at the Whale & Ale, 327 W 7th St, San Pedro 90731; www.whaleandale.com; 310-832-0363. It’s “A unique treat for those who love Sea Shanties,” says the venue. See the extensive write-up for the evening in the Guide’s Friday event listings.
+
And if you were wondering, we didn’t misspell things: “chanties, chanteys, shanties, & shanteys” are all accepted spellings for traditional songs of the sea, and different performers and events grab different spellings.
+
+
Running Saturday & Sunday, July 17 & 18, 2-6 pm is the “TARGET ARTS & WONDER FREE FAMILY FESTIVAL” another of the Guide’s “Show-of-the-Week” picks. It’s at Peck Park, 560 N Western Av, San Pedro 90732. The free two-day music and arts festival is presented by Target, with lots of live music, arts & crafts, “top quality” food venders, and more. Across the country, this same weekend, more than 80 participating institutions in 30 different cities are bringing their local versions of the “Arts & Wonder Festival” to life.
+
Saturday’s “TA&WFFF” line-up in San Pedro includes the TAIKO CENTER OF LOS ANGELES, LA CHARANGA CUBANA, SPIRIT CHORALE OF LOS ANGELES, and SACRED FIRE. It’s a day of powerful drums, danceable charanga and salsa, inspirational gospel plus an over-the-top tribute to Santana.
+
Sunday’s “TA&WFFF” line-up in San Pedro includes BONNE MUSIQUE ZYDECO (the band that had ‘em dancing in the aisles at the “Concert for Haiti” in January, produced by the Guide), plus: THE LYONS ACADEMY OF IRISH DANCE; two bands from the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor; NU PAN GROOVE ENSEMBLE; and LA SANTA CECILIA, one of Los Angeles’ most in-demand new bands, combining elements from Cumbia to Tango and more. It’s an afternoon of Irish dance, steel drum rhythms, high energy Cajun zydeco and Latin rhythms.
+
+
On Saturday, from 2-9 pm, is “A SWEET TASTE OF JAZZ” benefit, with BONNE MUSIQUE ZYDECO, P.V. TRIO, GREG ROSE, THE DAVID PATTERSON BAND, JOE SHASHATY, & DEE BRADLY and others, at New Orleans Vieux Carre Restaurant, 4317 Degnan Bl, L.A.
+
BONNE MUSIQUE ZYDECO had ‘em dancing in the aisles at the “Concert for Haiti,” produced by the Guide in January.
+
The event is a benefit for the nonprofit Randall D. Simmons Outreach Foundation. Officer Randal D. Simmons, a 27-year veteran of the LAPD, was shot during a standoff that injured another officer and claimed the lives of five civilians on Thursday, February 7, 2008. Officer Simmons is the first SWAT officer to die in the line of duty. The foundation is “designed to serve, empower and encourage families and individuals in underserved areas. Our core values are centered around the love and compassion that God requires us to have for one another.”
+
Event offers a no-host bar, food, music & dancing. Advance tix, 323-291-2441. Tix $35 general admission, includes appetizers; $50 VIP, includes appetizers & lunch.
+
+
Saturday evening, 5:45-11 pm, brings the 15th annual “NOHO MIDSUMMER NIGHTS COFFEE HOUSE & MUSIC FESTIVAL,” a popular local charity benefit.
+
“Summer Nights” is dinner and music, plus an added attraction this year is afternoon music workshops; check event website for details. It’s been described as “an enchanting evening under the stars with authentic traditional, original, and acoustic music” for the benefit of the ARC Center, “a socialization, recreation and residential living program” for developmentally disabled persons. Performers include “some of the area’s finest musicians and friends of ARC.” For years, this event has been a fixture on the NOHO music scene. Organizers say, “Be sure to arrive early and plan to stay late as you will not want to miss any of the great artists.” More at www.douginks.com/arc2008.html or 818-762-4365 (ARC) or 661-714-2549 (event producer). Admission includes dinner cuisine (served 5:30-8:30 pm), plus refreshments, treats, coffees, and cash bar from 5-10 pm. Suggested donation, $20 adults; $15 kids age 5-18; under age 5, free. +
“Summer Nights” is at the ARC Center, 6456 Whitsett Av (one block N of Victory between Coldwater Canyon & Laurel Canyon), North Hollywood.

+
Concertgoers are encouraged to bring blankets and picnics (normally not allowed) and settle back to savor the music. This Thursday evening summer-long series brings “The Evolution of American Jazz,” promising “L.A.’s best local talent for an evening of music under the trees.“

Ken tells us, “This will be a very special concert under the stars in the historic Redlands Bowl — and it’s free to the general public. 4) TANNAHILL WEAVERS PLAY CALTECH FOLK MUSIC SERIES JULY 17th
+
It’s a Guide “Show-of-the-Week” pick on July 17, at 8 pm, and it’s a rare West Coast performance by the THE TANNAHILL WEAVERS, a landmark Scottish/Celtic band. They’re playing the highly regarded Caltech Folk Music Society series in Beckman Institute Auditorium (Little Beckman) on the Caltech Campus, 322 S Michigan Av, Pasadena.
+
The Tannahill Weavers released their first album in 1976 and are credited as one of the early bands to successfully incorporate the Highland bagpipes, which had been primarily a solo instrument before. Each of them is a master musician.
+
Mojo Magazine called them “…world class musicians with passion and a healthy sense of fun, keeping alive and making accessible the very heart of the tradition itself.”
+
Caltech Folk Series hosts Rex Meyreis & Nick Smith are really excited about this one. They tell us, “Just listen to their beautiful medley of ‘Farewell to Fiunary’ and ‘Heather Island’ at www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRQwPikyP8U and see if you can resist attending! Their most recent CD, ‘Live and in Session,’ has an even more gorgeous live version of this song. This band has many sides, and their instrumental dance music is equally magnificent.”
+
They continue, “Try www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZsBeRDrkJU&feature=related for a good example.”
More at www.tannahillweavers.com.
+
This is the series last show until Sep 11, when they welcome ELIZA GILKYSON. More, including further developments, at http://folkmusic.caltech.edu.

+
Well, if you know da kine, then hang loose. This Saturday, July 17, at 7 pm, it’s a Guide “Show-of-the-Week” pick, as O’AHU plays the Coffee Gallery Backstage, “the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue.”
+
The Guide has, on numerous occasions, awarded a “Show-of-the-Week” pick to performances by bluesman STAN WEST. Well, who knew? – Stan is a member of O’AHU!
+
The band O’AHU is four talented musicians who have amassed, among them, more than 200 combined years of performing a diverse number of original song – traditional and contemporary Hawaiian music, and oldies. All vocalists, their music highlights beautiful and unique styles of harmonies.
+
O’ahu is accompanied by three beautiful hula dancers who dance throughout the evening. They have appeared several times at the Backstage with Hawaiian Pidgin English story teller KAMAKA BROWN, each time to rave reviews. Now they appear in their own all-music concert, in a must-see Hawaiian show.
+
O’ahu is UNCLE RODDY ALI’I KAULANA GREGORY, lead singer and accomplished musician performing since 1963; ROBERT IHILANI AGNO, wrote #1 hit “Maui;” STAN WEST, a legendary versatile steel player in blues, country western, rock and Hawaiian; and KAWIKA DACOSCOS, an internationally touring and accomplished musician. 7) ACCESSIBLE CLASSICAL GOES “BU-DE-BU-DE-BA, THAT’S ALL, FOLKS”
+
If you need a good reason to get to the Hollywood Bowl this summer, this is it. On Friday & Saturday, July 16 & 17 (runs two nights), at 8:30 pm, in a Guide “Show-of-the-Week” pick, it’s “WARNER BROS. PRESENTS BUGS BUNNY AT THE SYMPHONY” for the “Weekend Spectaculars” series with the LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC, GEORGE DAUGHERTY, conductor. We’ve seen this done before, and it’s an immersion in fun. Once upon a time, cartoons were choreographed and made superbly good use of music. None were ever better than the Warner Brothers cartoon franchise, with Bugs Bunny, the Road Runner & Coyote, Daffy Duck, and Elmer Fudd. THIS is accessible live symphonic music. If you’re old enough to know these cartoons, go, and be impressed with dimensions you never fully appreciated as a kid. If you’re not old enough to know the WB cartoon catalog, go and you’ll understand why everyone older than you thinks modern cartoons are crap. At the Hollywood Bowl, 2301 N Highland Av, Hollywood; 323-850-2000 or 213-480-3232; www.hollywoodbowl.com.

8) STILL MORE ACCESSIBLE CLASSICAL, OUTDOORS AND CHARMING…
+
Saturday, July 24, at 7:30 pm, in a Guide “Show-of-the-Week” pick, CAL PHIL – the California Philharmonic Orchestra – continues its delightful “FESTIVAL ON THE GREEN” summer season at the L.A. County Arboretum & Botanic Garden, 301 N Baldwin Av, Arcadia; info, tix, season subscriptions, 626-300-8200; www.calphil.org.
+
For those who prefer to be indoors, the same concert repeats Sunday afternoon, July 25, in the Walt Disney Concert Hall at the Music Center in downtown L.A.
+
Tonight’s theme is “JOHN WILLIAMS & FRIENDS,” from the cinema to the opera house, featuring music from “Star Wars” • “E.T.” • “Superman” • “Schindler’s List” • “Lord of the Rings” • “Wagner: The Ring” • “The Terminal” • featuring lasers by YLS, plus cellist DENNIS KARMAZYN and clarinetist MICHAEL ARNOLD.
+
“The Arboretum is one of the most spacious and comfortable outdoor concert venues in the world,” says Mindy Kernc, Box Office Director. “Not only do its gardens showcase plants from around the world but the grounds are dotted with historic sites you’ll instantly recognize like the lagoon from the old Tarzan movies and the Queen Anne Cottage from TV’s ‘Fantasy Island.’ And, of course, there are the peacocks. One or two almost always try to ‘sing’ along with the music each concert!”
+
“Fifteen years ago, Cal Phil began with a five-concert season of Cal Phil Festival on the Green,” says Founder and Music Director, DR. VICTOR VENER. “So, although our season has expanded to include concerts downtown at Walt Disney Concert Hall and at the Old Mill in San Marino, our performances at The Arboretum hold a special place not only in my heart but the heart of many of our musicians, who have been with us from the beginning.”
+
“Festival on the Green” is a series of summer Saturdays with peacocks, picnicking, and plenty of music at the 127-acre park. Gates open at 5:30 pm for picnicking (you can bring your own wine or beverage of your choice) or purchase dinner from the caterer (in advance, unless you want to take your chances they’ll bring extra), and the concert begins at 7:30 pm. Plentiful pay parking on-site. Get advance tix at Cal Phil’s website.

9) JACKSON BROWNE & DAVID LINDLEY AT THE GREEK THEATRE, JULY 23rd
On Friday, July 23, at 8 pm, in a Guide “Show-of-the-Week” pick, it’s JACKSON BROWNE plus DAVID LINDLEY at the Greek Theatre, 2700 N Vermont Ave in Griffith Park, L.A.; Greek Theatre hotline, 323-665-1927; tix, 213-480-3232; www.greektheatrela.com.
+
Singer-songwriter JACKSON BROWNE takes to the road this summer with his band and longtime friend and musical co-conspirator DAVID LINDLEY. The “Jackson Browne with David Lindley Tour” promotes the May 11 release of “Love Is Strange” (on Browne’s independent label, Inside Recordings), a 2-CD live set capturing a tour of Spain that Browne and Lindley did in 2006, produced by JACKSON BROWNE & PAUL DIETER.
+
Accompanying the pair on tour is Browne’s band of almost 20 years, with KEVIN McCORMICK on bass, MARK GOLDENBERG on guitars, MAURICIO LEWAK on drums, and JEFF YOUNG on keyboards and backing vocals. They’re joined by band members (since 2008) CHAVONNE STEWART & ALETHEA MILLS, vocalists that Browne (as a mentor) met in 2001 when they were attending Washington Preparatory High School in South Los Angeles, singing in the school choir.
+
On record and in performance, JACKSON BROWNE and DAVID LINDLEY have a musical association going back almost 40 years.
+
DAVID LINDLEY, the legendary stringed-instrument virtuoso, played on many of Browne’s albums, beginning with 1973’s “For Everyman.” Lindley contributed to Browne’s classics, including “Late For The Sky” and “The Pretender,” both on Rolling Stone’s list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.” In turn, Browne produced Lindley’s best-known LP, 1983’s acclaimed “El Rayo-X.”
+
Prior to their tour this year, the last time the two musicians played live dates together was a 2006 run of concerts in Spain, in grand concert halls, rock venues, and intimate clubs. That tour resulted in the new 2-CD album “Love Is Strange” / “En Vivo Con Tino,” featuring Browne and Lindley live with celebrated Spanish percussionist TINO DI GERALDO.
+
In liner notes Browne wrote for “Love Is Strange,” he considers Lindley’s reputation for elusiveness, nearly as mythic as his string-playing prowess. “Why had I not thought of this before? Take him where he doesn’t speak the language and he will HAVE TO leave the gig and come with you to the restaurant, or to the club,” says Browne, continuing, “This was an unexpected strategy breakthrough in a pursuit that for a legion of friends, disciples and admirers has become known as ‘stalking the wild Lindley.’”
+
Tix, Price: $76 / $66 / $56 / $46 / $40.50 + “Convenience Charge” of $13.50 per order (unless you get ‘em from the venue’s box office).

11) PLEASE SUPPORT THE GUIDE
(This item first ran as News Feature #6 in the July 1 edition. If you missed it, take a moment and read it, so you’ll know what changes we’ve made, and how to find anything you don’t see in the new on-line edition.)
+
While we are seeking commercial sponsors to assure that we can continue to publish the Guide, there’s no guarantee it will work. We’re giving it a good go. Still, we expect our situation will be just like your favorite NPR station: they depend, for most of their needs, on their individual supporters. We must depend on you, our readers, and the musicians whose gigs are listed in our pages.
+
We’ve been letting you know that The Guide needs your support to continue to bring you NEWS, and CONCERT & EVENT LISTINGS, and to offer you FREE TICKETS through the summer, and that we can only do that if we are still here. Some of you have responded with a check for $25, in return for THREE CDs of your choice, or for our professionally-produced live concert DVD + one CD of your choice. We are grateful to those readers and artists. (If you haven’t yet received your CDs or DVD/CD in the mail, please be patient, they’re coming.)
+
The Guide still needs everyone’s support. Really and truly. Many people read it regularly, and have never helped to sustain it. If that’s you, we need your support, especially. Doing this requires a TON of time. We’ve made our case to you. Our mailing address is below. We need a flood of support from our readers and the musicians whose gigs appear in the Guide.
+
Send us a check for $25, in return for THREE CDs of your choice, or for our professionally-produced live concert DVD and one CD of your choice.
+
Write your check for $25, made-out to “Tied to the Tracks,” and mail it TODAY to:
+
Tied to the Tracks
2424 Greenfield Av
Arcadia CA 91006
+
Then email us with a subject of “Guide thank you” and tell us whether you want 3 CDs of your choice, or the live concert DVD plus 1 CD of your choice (the catalogue of our extensive offerings is at http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com/2010/03/support-guide-and-get-some-great-dvds.html).
+
Please sustain our ability to get free tickets and goodies for you, and for the Guide to be able to continue bringing you all the news and events. And thanks again to those who have contributed to keep the Guide in moccasins!
