A Postcard From Evan Honer

EDITOR’S NOTE: Welcome to No Depression’s brand-new “Postcard From” series, where we ask artists for a dispatch from their daily lives on the road, in the studio, or anywhere in between. We’re kicking things off with Evan Honer, whose new album, Fighting For, came out earlier this month on Cloverdale Records. Look for his Nowhere Fast tour across the US this summer and deep into fall.
This photo was taken in my best friend’s backyard while we were having a campfire after our show in Portland, Oregon. I think it was one of the most fun nights on tour and also the most I have ever laughed in my life. We probably should not have been singing all night because the next show in Seattle was very rough for me and the whole band, my voice was pretty much gone. Looking back now, I think it was worth it.
We were singing songs the whole night and one of my good friends, Forrest, started free-styling to the song “Devil Went Down to Georgia” — he sang the entire song but knew zero lyrics. It was one of the best freestyles I’ve ever heard.
Touring that month was the most challenging month of my life but also the best month of my life. It is a weird thing to describe but when you’re on the road, all you want to be is home and when you’re off the road, all you want to be is back on the road. So many great memories on my first tour but this campfire stands out the most to me.
